Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits definitely comes to mind when I think of "smooth".

I'm not certain what you mean by "smooth", there are a lot of way to interpet "smooth", but I'll run with it an suggest this Rhino label series, Smooth Groves.

x2 on Massive Attack.  If you're going down the smoothest electronic road, then 'trip-hop' is where it's at (Archive's Londinium album, for example).
 
Also, combine trip hop with an avant-garde jazz trumpeter and you get DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo's Ki-Oku.  So so good.
