well I'm thinking that I've narrowed my choices down to either the 1st gen 4gb nano or 2nd gen 8gb.

I can get
1st gen 4gb refurb $175 (black)
1st gen 4gb new retail for $185 shipped (black)
2nd gen 4gb new retail for $190 shipped (silver)
2nd gen 8gb refurb for $215 shipped (black)

Is 1st gen really that much better?

Not really... by the time u add tax the 8gb is $215 which is the price I listed.
Yes, the 2nd gen 4gb is cheaper then the 1gen, that's why i asked if the 1st gen was really that much better. I know you can rockbox the 1st gen but not the 2nd gen... but is the SQ on the 1st gen better?

I plan to use line out, is 1st or 2nd gen better for that?

yeah, I've been watching ebay a bit, but ebay is really hit or miss. sometimes you make out and other times you don't. And even when u get a brand new item for a good price sometimes u have idiots who don't know how to pack and don't pay for the requested shipping insurance then you have to deal w/ them to try to get your $ back... I'm thinking that maybe just refurb or even new from a reputable company might be safer.

I'd strongly suggest an Apple refurb of 1st Gen. You need a company with a good reputation to stand behind an iPod...........and a 1st Gen is better-sounding ..........or you could go outside Apple with a Samsung YP-K3 and not bother with iTUnes - just drag 'n drop with WinXP.

or you can rockbox your 1st gen 'n STILL not bother with iTunes - just drag 'n drop :p

Before I get my iPod Nano 2G, there IS a line out on the thing right? Just need the correct connector right?
