What headphones are still very good un-amped?

Aside from building an amp, you can also try picking up a used receiver. I don't know about the UK, but two channel receivers are easily found here at thrift stores, junk shops, garage sales, etc. There's no definitive list of what works well with headphones, but you could always take your pair along and listen before you buy.

Though I'd encourage you to try a CMoy. There's plenty of information on it and anyone can build one. After that, you can move onto some serious kit for not much money.

Also, I think the HD-650 is an excellent headphone. If you can find a way to amp it, you'll be very happy.

Often, but of course, not always. Some of us just don't like the idea of amps (myself included). It's why I eventually picked the AD700 over the K701.
