I have the HFI 780 and like the overall sound. Highs may be slightly piercing along with slightly recessed mids. What recable should I look into? I see that the ATO recable is popular but I dont know much about it. Would an amp be enough of an upgrade?

You don't need a recable for that: change to Beyer velours and damp the cups with dynamat and you get mids tamed, bass tightened... and the mids come out. There's a huge thread re the 780s and dozens of others about this here.
