This is an impossible task for a rock-lover like me. You guys have made it even more complicated by slipping in artists like Joni Mitchell. Since we seem to be speaking broadly, I'll throw in some curve balls of my own. In no particular order off the top of my head:

1. The Smiths/Morrissey (DEAL with it)
2. The Who
3. Hendrix (duh!!!)
4. Scott Walker (the Existential Frank Sinatra)
5. Nick Drake (if carlo can have Joni Mitchell, I can have Nick Drake)
6. American Music Club/Mark Eitzel
7. Elvis Costello
8. The Replacements
9. Otis Redding (yeah, he's southern soul but I'm putting hime here)
10. Randy Newman

Now that's a diverse collection! That should really throw this thread off-course!

heh, I used to SO hate them. Now I kinda miss em.... What was that one song "I am human and I need to be loved.."? There was a plain version of it an d a HUGE REVERB-VERB-ERB-RB-B version I thnk. I like that one. Anyway:

1. Frank Zappa - Obvious
2. Fishbone - The Hardest Workin Band I ever saw. Why aren't there gold plated statues of Angelo and Walter at the LA Airport?
3. Neil Young - In any phase, with any band - always good.
4. Rev. Horton Heat - Full Kustom, Baby!
5. Mike Keneally - The only post-Zappa band member to make it with his true identity intact. I like Mike.
6. Cocteau Twins - nothing else like them
7. Jane's Addiction (tied with Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Both of these bands were really good when they were all on heroin. They cleaned up, broke up, and, in the case of the peppers, SUCKED up. I digress.
8. The Beat Farmers - I really miss Country Dick Montana.
9. ZZ Top - Got a soft spot in my heart for these guys. Deal with that!
10. They Might Be Giants - rock and roll for the tragically literate.
11. The Sugarcubes - Why not?!

ok,
eric

only 4 people had the beatles in their list!! and of the 4, only 1 person had them at the top! you gotta be kidding me!
perhaps many would not consider them in the 'rock' category, but still.

there's this little band from liverpool, folks. they were called the beatles. they were the best rock band ever. no discussion.

end of RANT.
