What Are You Listening To Right Now?

Just released on July 17th. This is easily the best album I’ve heard in a long time. Make no mistake, this is no reliving the past album. No commercial BS. Raw, unrelenting, unforgiving, hard driving. There are no weak tracks here to skip past. It was easy to sit down and listen straight through. I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time to come along and wondered if anyone could deliver on this scale. Jimmy Cliff is the man and Tim Armstrong of Rancid helped him deliver it in spades.

Excerpts from the liner notes:

The day Jimmy Cliff met Tim Armstrong at the legendary Sound Factory studio in Hollywood wasn’t just another day. It was a day of musical magic, a day where two kindred spirits began a journey that produced the recording in your hands right now, “REBIRTH.” Within moments of meeting, Jimmy made his way in to the studio where a “nyahbinghi repeater” drum had been placed. For the next 15 minutes, we all watched in amazement as Jimmy lost his mind and soul in a free-form jam session of one. Thankfully somebody hit record and that impromptu jam track became the original backing track for “Guns of Brixton.” Within 48 hours of meeting, “Ruby Soho” and “Guns of Brixton” were done. The vibe around the studio was electric; even though Jimmy planned on calling it quits after that first session, he cancelled plans and stayed in LA to create more music. Over three more days, “World Upside Down,” “Ship Is Sailing,” “One More” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” were created. Just like that, the Sacred Fire EP was done…….Same vintage gear as used back in 1967-68, same recording techniques, same consciousness, same spirit, same everything…..everybody playing and singing live….One take vocals were kept often….every possible labor of love went in….The whole goal was to capture a feeling, a moment where you could drift away, when music could have a total impact on culture and reflect the times.
