The sound of these recordings sits somewhere between traditional and historically informed. For a part because Eliot Gardiner very early on managed to get some polish and refinement in his period orchestra, compared to his colleagues/rivals on other labels: Roger Norrington and Christopher Hogwood. Another reason is that DG's 70s sound made it into the early 80s, that distinct studio manipulated polish. With this the leaner sounding HIP orchestra sounds remarkably 'romantic'. I like this sound a lot, but do notice that it isn't as natural as say Harmonia Mundi or Decca's L'Oiseau Lyre in that time period.
There are numerous recordings made after Gardiner's complete box set. Many with a more natural recorded sound. And most with a more biting and dynamic ensemble sound, a deliberate non-polish which I generally prefer over polish in early music up to Beethoven and maybe Schumann. But since Mozarts piano concertos are so lyrical, a romantic approach (mainly in sound only) does really appeal to me. I find Gardiner ideal in these concertos.

Great imaging!

Grusin’s GRP Label and its post production creations are highly underrated and to be appreciated as you and I do with our better gear revealing as you point out, audiophile nuances of imaging, dynamics and soundstages to delight.

Of course Dave is one hella talented artist who surrounds himself with other amazing artists with whom to converse musically.

I especially enjoy his “Homage to Duke” - A must listen, that gives a kick every time!

Happy listenings~
