I love this music, and I'm not even into the 'jazz' genre, so I don't know anything about hard bop influences; I like this period of Miles because it gives me a similar feel to some of the best Grateful Dead space jams..... Speaking of jazz and Dead, Branford Marsalis, David Murray, and Ornette Coleman have all jammed with the Dead on various occasions....
"Hard bop" jazz meant less sustained melodies and more improvisation ... the jazz that evolved after the big band days. Longer individual solos meant more "disjointed" overall. Coltrane and Miles excelled at hard bop. Fusion started there but, over time, it got smoother and more melodious. Like Weather Report and Return to Forever - the music that I really love. But, in general, I love all music and embrace it for what it is.

And also jamming with Jerry Garcia was ... David Crosby. Courtesy of my Dead Head friend Gony in Tel Aviv.
