@Ableza and @LarsMan thanks for the idea on Ministry. Went down a rabbit hole and then found out that Paul D’Amour played on this album. Loved him from Tool.

Very difficult to pick a favorite, I like all three recordings of the Mendelssohn violin concerto.
Mullova/Mariner is somewhat plain, measured and reserved. It is almost played like a classical period piece instead of a romantic. Some may find it a bit cold and detached. I'd say very refined and elegant. She made another recording with Gardiner, which is fine as well. but in that recording her violin tone is rather thin and without emotion.
Chung/Dutoit is spontaneous, passionate and fun, with it come some rough edges, which I highly enjoy.
Jansen/Chailly sit- yep, this highly predictable - somewhere between these recordings. Not quite, but give me a break, I have to make it easier for me to rank and describe it. Jansen has the most variety in her approach. Het tone is traditionally romantic at times, at other times more 'modernly restrained'. Some may find this distracting, that she should pick one approach and go for it. I think it sounds completely natural.
The recorded sound of the Mullova/Mariner disc is the best in my opinion, I couldn't stamp a date on it, it just sounds completely natural.
The Chung/Dutoit recordings sounds marvelous, but it sounds a tad dated.
The Jansen/Chailly recording is odd. Just with Chailly's Brahms and Beethoven symphony cycles the instrument sections, especially the string section sounds like an opaque block of noise at times, without any separation. It must have something to do with the hall acoustics of the Gewandhaus? Listening to this disc with headphones, when there are no distracting noises outside, the sound is nicely spread out like a proper stereo recording. But I have listened to this disc when I had my airco on and it felt like a mono recording, with one single flat block of sound in the middle, very weird.
Still, if I had to pick a favorite it would be this Jansen/Chailly recording
