Great ... I still remember (some of) the lyrics to that song. The Day the Music Died.

For today ... Mr. Byrd morphs from hard bop into funky jazz fusion.






The first album, from 1964, was still in bop mode and uses a gospel choir as
an interesting vocal jazz instrument. The latter two are both 1973 - in full fusion/
funk mode. Mr. Byrd was somewhat unique in that his fusion was on the far side
of funk. Most of the other fusion artists had more of a rock or jazz influence.
