-I haven't quite made up my mind yet, this is my first serious attempt at Shostakovich' fifth in ages, I'll give it another couple of listens tonight. One thing is certain, though - if there was ever one conductor who could know what Shostakovich really meant with his -ahem- politically correct work, it would be Rostropovich.

As much as I LOVE the sidemen on this session and as highly acclaimed as this record is, I've never managed to get anything out of it thus far. Every time I listen to it I hope it suddenly starts sounding like Out to Lunch! 1.1, but so far it never has.
