I have seen her last Saturday in the Blue Note with her Trio, mostly tunes from the new "Alive" album.
Technically brilliant, highly dynamic but a lot of show. Rather dishing out in heaps than making every note count. I have seen her together with Stanley Clarke a few month ago (same location) and that was better. She unstoppable when she's in charge. A lot of the audience were Japanese and they loved her. I won't go see her live again. Just not my style.

I've been comparing two highly regarded performances of Gabriel Fauré's two Cello Sonatas (Op. 109 and Op. 117).

Cecile Licad, piano

Peter Bruns, cello
Roglit Ishay, piano

 
What most interested me about doing this comparison was the fact that the Bruns/Ishay performance uses period instruments while the Gerhardt/Licad uses modern ones. I like both versions very much and really can't say it's better one way or the other. I think they're equally valid approaches each with their own plusses and minuses.

Boris may have just created their most accessible record to date. That does not mean it lacks ambition, for this album is one of the smoothest rock records out there, full of the exceptional musicianship Boris are known for. To put a genre to the album would be a disservice to the music and everything Boris are working toward. This certainly is a labor of love and a product of three brilliant minds working together as one entity with a shared vision and immense comprehension of the various facets of that which is music.
