Mofongo

Mofongo is another Puerto Rican dish and it’s different from mondongo. Mofongo is made from mashed plantains and it is usually served with some kind of meat or seafood.

This version in the photo was excellent. I’ve had mofongo before and it was good and of course there’s bad versions too. But this version here was so far the best version I’ve had.

It was served with roasted pork which was also excellent.

Lastly, I feel that Puerto Rican food can be more popular if it was more advertised. It’s really delicious and easy to like. I have a friend who’s a picky eater and he was impressed. Of course there can be bad or mediocre versions but when it’s good it really shines and tastes like a fancy delicacy.

Classic guacamole with chips.

The most important thing with guacamole is the quality of the avocados. That is crucial.

I also liked how this restaurant garnished with radish slices. Most people don’t know this but radishes are well liked in Mexico.

Also, the chips are crucial. Chips fried freshly in restaurant is so much better than store bought ones.

Congee with a side of fried dough

A very popular Chinese food item. Congee is a rice porridge. This version has century eggs and ground pork bits.

It’s very popular and very common because it’s so excellent. It’s one of the greatest comfort foods of all time.

Especially on a cold winter day when you’re walking down a street. Step inside a tiny restaurant and have a wonderful bowl of this savory warmth.

Chinese cumin lamb skewers

This is incredible. Definitely one of the best food items in the world. Lamb can have that weird funky taste but this restaurant uses high end premium quality lamb and that savory meaty flavor just explodes your mouth. There was none of that unpleasant funky lamb taste at all. Just big savory flavor.

The down side is that it can get expensive since high quality meat was used and my bill went over $60.

But it was worth it. This actually tasted better than the steaks from the high end expensive steakhouses and I think serious steak lovers will love something like this even though it’s not beef. I was really impressed.

Also, there is this misconception that Chinese food is cheap but when you get into serious high quality stuff, it is not cheap and it’s food of the gods.

Ice cold Japanese noodle soup

Wow. So impressed.

Everyone knows of the popular warm ramen noodles but Japan also has ice cold noodles too in their culture and I absolutely adore it.

This version was so good. I loved it.

I apologize for the bad photo. It doesn’t look good but it was great and so unique.

It probably won’t become popular within our lifetime but maybe in the next generation or next century? In my opinion ice cold noodle soups are one of the best kept secrets in the food world.

That's interesting. I didn't know there was ice cold noodle Japanese dishes. I wonder what kind of broth on the noodles? It's nice for summer time I bet.

^ It tasted like a dashi type of broth I think. Cold noodles have been around for a long time in Japan and Korea and this dish tasted like a more soupy version of the classic cold soba noodle dish.

The Japanese manager basically said what you said about it being nice in the summer.

Also…..A few years ago, I tasted another different version of a cold noodle dish in a Japanese restaurant. So it’s not my first time.

A characteristic of ice cold Asian noodles is that the cold temperature tends to make it more tough and chewy. I like that texture. I think Italians will like it too since many Italians like that “al denete” texture (as they say in Italy). Not sure if it will be popular in America though. But who knows?

Visiting South Carolina for the weekend

The famous chopped barbecue.

In North and South Carolina they call a lot of their pork bbq “chopped barbecue” if it’s served in an old traditional style place. It’s a regional specialty of that part of America.

This lunch was at a cool rundown hillbilly type of place that I enjoyed. It kind of reminded me of some of the old movies about the South.

This was a really good version. On point and enjoyable.

Edit:

If you’re a traditional purist in the Carolinas, you call this pork dish as barbecue. Other meats such as chicken would not be called barbecue even if the cooking process is basically the same. So the name “barbecue chicken” would not normally be applied. But of course, we live in modern times and the name system changes. The old traditional places will still use the old naming system.

Southern boiled peanuts

This is an old American food item that most Americans have never heard of.

It sounds weird to boil peanuts but if it’s done correctly it is excellent and shockingly good. But it’s gotta be done right in order for the magic to happen.

It’s one of those dishes that looks ugly but really delicious.
