How do they sound today compared with more modern headphones?

To my ears they are comparable to my SR-60.

The HD414 look so simple, has a disco look

Btw, forgot to mention that I still own all of the headphones I've collected over the years - with the exception of one of my K240Ms, which I've constantly borrowed to my stepfather. Oh, and then there's one pair of stock earbuds on constant loan to my mum together with the accompanying Aiwa walkman. So I sort of still own these, too. Headphones... preciousss... all mine...

I am not sure how old these headphones are but I would guess at least 20 years. They are New in the Box, JAX Stereo Headphone SN-01. I found these in my neighbors closet. I was helping his widow clean up and getting the heavy stuff separated into junk and to save. I found another small box full of NOS JAN tubes as well.

I still keep Koss HV1LC bought back in 82, 1 channel working, sounded quite good and heavy (literally, with that tweeter magnet ! =)

The senns 414(sl), 420 and 230 sound plain wrong compared to modern 580, the closest balance being 420 but with muffled highs.

Koss Pro 4 AA circa 1976. The connectors are held together with tightly wound electrical tape.

I think the comparison between senns 414 and 420 are most just. I will remember that Hd414 were rather cheap also with the money value of that time.

I have some Sony headphones I bought for $10 in 1998 that to me sounded great at the time, but now I can hear they're all mids and nothing else. My brother's Sony Style headphones actually sound better than those, so I guess Sony's quality is improving somewhat.

Did you really mean 1998? Doesn't sound so very old to me.

The oldest pair I have are Realistic (RadioShack) electrostatic headphones from the early/mid 70's! Somewhere, I also have an old pair of Nakamichi's from the early 80's stashed away...

Am I allowed to throw in earphones?

I have a couple of sony headphones that have been around since the early 1980s (plus the walkman that they came with), but nothing takes the biscuit than my parents' mono canalphones. They're like IEMs, and they have a ridiculous 7-metre cord (or 21, I can't really remember).

Holy crap, my dad had a set of those Pioneer SE-50's when we lived in singapore in '72. I haven't seen them in years, still in the attic I guess. I used to listen to them quite a bit in the '70's before I got my Wharfedales.

My current oldest set is my HD 580's from the mid-late '90's
