What are the NEGATIVES of Owning the Beyerdynamic DT880's?
Feb 8, 2006 at 4:45 PM Post #76 of 168
The way that the internet works in blowing things out of proportion, I would think that if a popular can like the DT880 were to have durability issues, it would be reported quite often and vehemently.

Ety ER-4P's (where a couple of people have experienced problems with cracks in the casing - usually not affecting the performance, I believe, or, in my case, intermittent - once every few months - connection problems where the wire plugs into the casing. I just have to push it farther in.)

UE-10 Pro (cracks in the mold, also not affecting the performance, to my knowledge)

Sony E888 (some say the thin portion of the stalk is prone to breaking)

Sensaphonic 2XS (I can't remember who, but a Head-Fier reported a driver cutting out)

I'm sure there have been more than just these (I don't read EVERY post here

), but I find it interesting that all of the ones I've come across have been models you have to insert in your ears. I wonder if their small size makes them weaker or if the insertion process subjects them to stresses other 'phones don't have to deal with.

Let's not forget all the complaints about Shure earphones:

Let's face it, headphones (especially IEM's) have a failure rate higher than other transducers.

So hard to prove - the package was not smashed, and they still work and sound ok most of the time.

As for the internet blowing things out of proportion, don't know what to tell ya. I'm just one guy with one set of bad cans.

Hey, I'm trying to sell the damn things - nothing more honest (or maybe stupid) than negotiating against yourself. I'm reporting, you decide.

DT880 is built like a rock, durability is one of its strong suits, you're the first to have ever reported this problem (that I know of)

Have you considered having beyer fix it up and see what the real problem is?

With all of the Paypal fees and shipping around here and there, I have $300 in them already. I'm not paying to ship them and pay for repairs too. They were my favorite when I got them, but not anymore. I just want out of them.

Enough from me on the DT-880's.

Out.

Certainly, one reported case of them falling apart is noteworthy, but until a trend develops, it's remains an isolated anamoly. Let's not extrapolate and make conclusions about durability.

But - here's the ultimate negative. Mine didn't hold up. I bought them new and I used them often but gently. I sold them recently and packed them very well. Buyer reported a problem so I bought them back. Either they blew or they couldn't take the shipping.

I'm dumping them now as is in the HFi sale forum. I could not be more disappointed in them now.

Maybe they're brittle in more ways than one.

maybe the buyer blew them out, then wanted his $ back?

I find they don't need it. They sound great with no crossfeed. The only crossfeed I've used with them has been through WMP and it didn't seem to do much. It sounded a little less resolving to me, but then maybe WMP's crossfeed sucks - I don't know.

I wonder what I'll be getting in my box?
Broken DT880s with coiled cord and ugly 2006 sci-fi look!

I'd love to have the straight cord! I keep my fingers crossed.

There is a thread on this.

Utterly ridiculous... one claim of "muddy midrange" means exactly nothing.

It was probably the reviewer's amp or source that was muddy. IMO the mids on the DT880 are so revealing that they will show a muddy amp/source immediately, where another headphone like HD600/650 may not. Garbage in, garbage out.

Upon the arrival of my Babies on Valentine Day,
Hallelujha! I found that the headband seemed
to be fragile as compared to my Senn HD595s!
Will my babies last or not, this is the Question!

They seem to be very comfotable, less pressure on my medium size head,
but the fragility of the headband .... well, I keep my fingers crossed.
I've also read about it in a professional audio magazine. They said that
the built of the headband did not correspond to the high standard
of these very high quality headphones.

See you at the Winter Olympic Games
