Westone UM PRO Series Thread

That's going to be a huge step up from UMPro30 to ES60

, both in sound and pricing.

I never found Pro30 to be too warm, it wasn't as resolving as Pro50, but paired up surprisingly well with many sources, including my Note 4.  But for sure, it sounds like you are looking for something more neutral and more detailed.  ES60 definitely will hit a sweet spot.  If your local store carries W80, try them as well.  But man, why or why Westone never made a universal version of ES60.  That would have been a huge audiophile hit.

Do you know how the Null audio cable would compare to the Whiplash cable?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with NA cables.  Keep in mind, it's not just one brand vs the other.  There is different wire material (pure copper, silver plated copper, pure silver, gold plated silver), different wire geometry, shielding, isolation, etc.  Every manufacturer has their own cooking formula.  In theory, the same type of wires from different manufacturers should yield similar results, but in reality I hear some difference; sometimes more subtle, while other times more noticeable.  Cable discussions are very controversial

Yes I know, I wish I would've tested the alo cable while I had it.  Now I'm about to spend another $300+ on cables, but I will definitely have to go with someone who has a return policy in case my ears can't discern a difference.

Another thing I noticed is that a lot of the cable makers seem to have bad reviews not for the product, but for the customer service.  It seems like if I purchase one, only Jesus knows when I will get them.  Unfortunately, I'm way too impatient for that.

By the way, what iems would you consider to be better than the um pro 50 or w50 in case I wanted to upgrade outside of the w80?

I'm using the UM Pro 20's for casual listening and so far they are great. May look in to getting a different cord though....

It should work with any mmcx connector cable, just makes sure the housing of the connector is on a slimmer size.  Before buying it, ask the seller for compatibility with Westone shells.

Btw, why do you want to get a different cable?  For comfort or to change the sound?

Am no specialist, nor am I familiar with the terms to describe sound.

I was happily using my Westone 4 for the past few years, til one day sound from the right monitor was cut, probably a cable issue.
I've gotten used to the Westone 4 sound and it suited me great.

Spent an afternoon trying out the W50, W60, W80, UM Pro 30, UM Pro 50.
The W60, W80 weren't too bad, but when I tried the UM Pro 30, I instantly liked the sound, and felt it was pretty close to my Westone 4.

Ordered the Pro30, and picked it up half hour ago.
Am listening to it now ... for some reason, it sounds a little 'muffled' (please pardon my lack of correct terminology), not as clear/crisp as when I tried the sample Pro30 from the day before.

Could this be a burn-in issue?

I'm open to trying other cables (black color preferred) if they could bring the sound even closer to the Westone 4.

Would like to seek your thoughts and recommendations.

Thank you.

What source or device did you use to test and what type of files what tips and what song?  Basically, are you comparing apples to apples?

I was looking at a cable that says for Shure SE846.  Would that work for um pro 50?

Hi. When I tested the sample Pro30 at the store, it was on my iphone7, with my own Comply foam tips, on several songs on my itunes, most (if not all) were 320 MP3s.
When I received the new Pro30 earlier, the device and setup was the same, I used the same Comply foam tips, same phone, same few songs.

Although it's said that BA drivers aren't affected by burn in I'd give it a few days before making any judgements.
As for cable, I'm using a Double Helix hybrid peptide (silver plated copper litz wire), I find it opens up the sound a bit,
it's a bit more forward. To me it clears up any muddiness in the UM30 Pro.
Also check out offerings from PeterK
here's a thread about his cables: http://www.head-fi.org/t/779584/peterek-formerly-ccaspertfg-mod-cable-thread

Depends on the size of the connectors. If they are thick, it may not fit due to its design.

I had a similar experience and I have to say that time is what I needed to appreciate these babies (Pro30).  I feel the overall tuning is a bit dark but I started to actually enjoy it.  I find the Pro50s to be a bit too dark and bass heavy.  I always go back to the Pro30s, I think you made a good choice.  Just give it time.

I think source makes a huge difference too.  Any of the Fiio products didn't help with the dark sound.  I am currently using Sony ZX1 and Pioneer DAP and the sound is great.  I have also tried the cable thing - I feel (my feelings only) not a huge change but it does change the sound slightly.

I've decided to sell my Westone W60, but hold on to my UM Pro 50.

The W60 is technically a better IEM, but I've been grabbing for the UM Pro 50 more.

Wondering what you mean by technically better? I sold the w80 for the um pro 50. I like the pro 50 better as well. I could day the e70 might be technically better because its flat an redicously non forgiving. But i couldn't say that about the w80 which is supposed to b an upgrade to the w60.
