Westone UM PRO Series Thread

I'm about to make a leap as kind of an audio-noob and will soon be investing more than 50 bucks on earphones after I pop down to a local store to test a few of these earphones.

I'm going to test the UM Pro 10, W10, Se 215, and Se 315s.

From what I've gathered from some really helpful members of the forum, the SE 215 (though it is a Shure product) are somewhat muddy and not great for classical/clarity in general.  SE 315 is better, but not justified in being nearly 100 dollars more expensive (here in Singapore).  The UM Pro 10 is decent and generally on par with the W10.  W10 supposedly cleaner.

However, for some reason, the W10's are priced at 299 whereas the UM Pro 10's are priced at 215.  I'm guessing this is coming from the generally useless value-added stuff (replaceable body, replaceable body tool, extra iphone cable, useless imo).

I'm leaning very heavily towards the UM Pro 10's due to price/ theoretical sound.

However, I want to know if these are getting replaced soon?  If yes, I'll hold off on the purchase and wait for the new ones to come (holidays?).

I had se535 and now the UM Pro 30. Never heard the cheaper models of both brands but I prefer Westone's signature overall. For classical I think I'll chose se535 over UM Pro 30. Anyway I don't know if is the same for W10/UM Pro 10 and Se215/315..

I just got the Audio Technica IM02.  Much better than the entry level Westones/Shures I tried.  For some reason, the UM Pro 10s sounded especially off.  An odd emphasis on mid-highs while failing to deliver bass or mids made for a truly strange sounding pair of IEMs.  The clarity on the entry level Shures was disappointing imo.

IMO none of the single BA models suffice for good sound quality (315, w10, um pro 10). You will just want something more soon enough. I would always advise getting at least w20 um pro 20. Double BA unit IEMs reach a sweet spot such that you could stay with them for the rest of your life.

Reading this thread, the UM Pro 10 seems to have fallen a bit short. I'd like to spend ~$120, and I want a neutral sound signature (preferably with punchy bass, guitars in your face, without sacrificing vocals). I'd love to get the GR07, but I need good isolation. The RE-400 seems like a good choice as well, but build quality and isolation seem to fall short on these. Are the UM Pro 10s a real step down from these in SQ/how do they compare?

Who is telling you isolation sucks on those IEMs?

Most reviews that I've read that say anything about isolation say they isolate about averagely; I go on a very loud bus everyday, so I wanted to try to get the best isolation possible without sacrificing SQ.

The reason I want to block out more outside noise is so that I don't have to turn up the volume. I have to turn up my current headphone to block out noise, and I'm afraid of damaging my hearing. I listen to rock and I do listen at fairly high levels when not on the bus (not loud enough to damage my hearing I think, and I usually only listen for ~30-45 minutes at a time), and to be able to hear my music at the level I want it while on the bus, I have to turn it up to a level that I'm afraid is too loud.

comply tips blocks out noise the best of all tips in my expereince, the GR07 will have compatible ones, not sure about the RE400 though. The UM PRO 10 comes with a full set as well.

I do not have experience with the GR07 or the RE-400, but if you are interested I can tell you about Westone's/Shure's entry-level IEMs.  The UM-PRO 10s don't have much bass, and emphasize an odd mid-high range of notes while not exactly delivering on mids.  In general it was too floaty for me.  The W10s were better in terms of clarity, but did not beat the SE215.

The Westone seems to have not enough bass, and the SE215 seems to have too much; yet these two are constantly recommended as the most isolating IEMs for this price range. I'd like something neutral with a hint of warmth and good clarity that isolates well; I may just go with the SE215, but I'm afraid guitars won't shine like I want them to.
