Up to you! The Sansa would be more portable, and you can put rockbox on it for EQ.
 
But then, the S3 is more handy, but adding a DAC/AMP would make it bulky.
 
If you're hearing noise floor with the S3, maybe look up some of the audio related kernal upgrades. Unless it's just an output impedance issue.

I'm not very good with my knowledge about output impedance and dac/amp specs can you help me figure this out? My phone is rooted.

If you just need a little more pop and not much bulk try the fiio rocky if you need more pop and a reasonable price I recommend the fiio e11.

I already have the Fiio E6 but it's a bit unconvienient. Maybe I should just get a DAP, the battery life on the S3 drops a ton and i'm too lazy to convert flac to mp3.

That's weird that your battery drop oh your s3 it has pretty good battery life I recommend a battery replacement. If your looking for a good dap I recommend the fiio x3.

Sansa clip+ is plenty cheap enough, and widely available.

Have loved my Westone 3's for the 13 months I've had them but plastic casing has split in half and I've lost one half so can't glue them back together, so upset .

You should consider having them re shelled then. I did it and it was completely worth it.

The w40 are hands down better than the Westone 3's

How?  Doesn't it depend what he's looking for?  W3 has much more bass qty and is crisper and more coherent sounding.  W4 has much better midrange.

I wouldn't even bother putting them head-to-head. Different sound signatures for different audiences. One is certainly not "hands down better" than the other.
