Amen! Love the V8 with RCA tubes all around.
If you like the RCA 12AU7, you are in for a treat, as there are quite a few different 12AU7 that sound just as good or "better". I rolled through that entire family a couple of years ago, and there are a bunch of good ones, and a few really exceptional ones (G73R) as well.

What would you recommend in the reasonably priced range? Like cap at $100?

@The Piper Did you ever get a chance to check the output impedance of the V8 OTL?
Gain = 22dB into 300 ohms (12AY7)

Gain = 14dB into 300 ohms (12AU7)

Gain = 16dB into 32 ohms (12AY7)

Gain = 8dB into 32 ohms (12AU7)

Max Output Voltage = 11Vrms into 300 ohms

Max Output Voltage = 3.5Vrms into 32 ohms

Output Impedance = 32 ohms

Brimar 13D5 is a great value, to my ear. That said, you'll gain significantly by investing upwards to ~$200 per pair and hunt down some late 1950s / early 60's Raytheon Black Plates.

I won't debate the G73R point (above) - I just personally hate the idea of investing so much - when one microphonic tube and your out a big sack of :moneybag:

I could stretch to that if the Sonics were worth it. Now that I’m learning the amp what I’d like sonically is a warmer wetter sound from it. Not too too warm but warmer still than where I’m at with my rca tubes and especially from stock.

Really interested to hear a headtrip or second version. I've read good things.

I would look for some Mullard ECC82 with long plates and square getter, 57' or earlier.
