Did a test today with Windows 7 64 bit Foobar2000 and WASAPI. It does not pass an HDCD decodeable bit stream to a downstream HDCD decoding DAC.

Yet anoth bitperfect myth, you must use ASIO to get bit perfect out of your computer.

maybe this is relevant? http://www.head-fi.org/forums/5890444-post45.html

you didn't specify what soundcard you used...it would appear that it's got bit-matched ASIO drivers, but not KS/WASAPI....a wild guess would be that you tried a X-Fi?

WASAPI *is* bit-perfect, but it's only an audio renderer to your system audio drivers....if your audio drivers like to resample and what not, then you're SOL anyway.

Interesting indeed!
Guess those MS Windows Vista users claiming WASAPI is the way to go for bit-perfect audio need to suck up their words..

not sure that I can tell a difference but I switched over to the creative ASIO, I have no reason not to believe you.

I`ve noticed too, with xfi in vista, while playing in Foobar different sample rates files, the Audio Creation Mode(bitmatched playback) doesnt change the sample rate according to the file, while it does always using ASIO.

Never posted cause, a lot here use asus STX which its not bit perfect by default..

you're only as strong as your weakest link, that's all...it'd be like having a shielded door w/ a crappy lock.

M-Audio/RME/Echo Digital offer bit-perfect MME/ASIO/KS/WASAPI(WaveRT) drivers, but your average consumer brand couldn't care less(that includes all the cards using C-Media DSP chips/drivers)

Creative and E-mu only do bit-perfect in ASIO.

I've been in contact w/ Asus lately, and they've promised to release bit-matched drivers(automatic hardware samplerate, forbidding SRC) for the STX/ST anytime soon...time will tell!

How are you verifying bit perfectness using the DacMagic? The DacMagic doesn't do HDCD so you can't base a test on it lighting up its HDCD light. The lights on the front of the DacMagic just show you the incoming sample rate, not that the incoming data is bit perfect. You could feed the data from the DacMagic to a second DAC that does do HDCD to verify bit perfectness that way.
