You need to tap into the Matt Pike legacy. Start with Sleep, then move on to High on Fire and finally Kalas.

Dopesmoker (Sleeps 64 minute opus) is a daunting listen. If you get it, you get it - and it's very rewarding if you do. Start with "Holy Mountain" before you dive in though.

Other recommendations (some already mentioned):

At the Gates
Death by Stereo
Slayer (staple)
Anthrax (staple)
Isis (prog)
Pelican (Instrumental)
The Mars Volta (prog)
Fall of Troy (proggy punk/metal)
Propagandhi (Later releases are thrash punk, very metal influenced. Check out "Potemkin City Limits" and "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes)
Electric Wizard
Witchcraft (70s style to a point of almost belonging in the 70s)
Witch

If you like chunky riffs, intense technical drumming with progressive elements then you might like Aghora - Formless. Their debut album is amazing too (more intricate and cerebral) but Formless is definitely the headbangers choice.

In Hardcore(ish):
Sick of it All
Poison the Well
It Dies Today
Throwdown
Afraid of That Day
Gorilla Biscuits
Azriel (Burn Illusionary Night)
Dillinger Escape Plan
Remembering Never
Norma Jean
If Hope Dies
Lights Go Out
Haste the Day
Heaven Shall Burn

^some of the above might be toeing the line near cookie monster vocals...check them out on myspace first.

In Metal:
Adiago (like a mix of Maiden, Metallica, and orchestral backing)
Am I Blood (vocalist sounds like James Hetfield after a pack of cigarettes)
Anacrusis
Avenged Sevenfold (early work, not city of evil)
Borknagar (mixes screams with clean vocals and cool backing music)
Calico System
Chimaira
Damage Plan (RIP Dime)
Deadlock (female vocals with cookie monster backing)
Demons and Wizards (power metal, worth checking out)
Ever Since
Fate's Warning
Liquid Tension Experiment (great instrumental band)
Manowar (ooold school, Iron Maiden-esque)
Pain of Salvation
Red Flags
Rhapsody
Seventh Wonder
The Autumn Offering

yaaa, im liking alot of the bands named here.

id try Darksuns along with katatonia (already mentioned but they go hand-in-hand).

Death By Stereo is a great band as mentioned and a good stepping stone.

My suggestions:

Agents of Man
Just Ask
9MM
Later Soilwork
Fei Commodo
Haste The Day is a good band as mentioned, you'd want to go with the last two albums they put out...as there is next to no cookie monster singing.
Into Eternity (has some of the cookie monster) great progressive metal
New God Forbid
New Poison the Well

An awesome metal album that has just been released is "The Origins Of Ruin" by the band Redemption. Kind of a mix between Fates Warning and Dream Theater, but darker and very introspective.

Depends what you want.

Viking metal? Amon Amarth.
Gothic metal? Type O Negative or Lacuna Coil.
Power metal? Blind Guardian or Symphony X.
Death metal? Napalm Death or Arch Enemy.

If you're looking for more, check my profile. It'll surely satisfy as far as quantity goes.

Amon Amarth isn't really viking metal, Symphony X is not power metal, Napalm Death is only about 10% death metal, and Lacuna Coil is barely even metal in the first place.
