Today I went to the local audio shop to listen to the AKG K701 a second time. After sounding like an idiot in the "AKG K701 & K601 very brief impressions" thread http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showt...8&page=1&pp=20 I wanted to redeem myself and prove I could at least post something semi-useful.

So I gathered up what little courage I could muster and entered the "wallet-sucking" local audio shop. I asked if I could listen to the K701 again and this time I was prepared. I brought the ATH-AD2000 and DT880/Cardas to compare with the K701.

After listening for a while, I remarked to the salesperson that the sound signature of the K701 seemed similar to the AD2000 and DT880. All three are relatively bright and airy, although the K701 was slightly warmer and darker.

The salesperson said maybe I would be interested in the L3000, which has a very different sound signature. I've never heard the L3000, and was concerned about my wallet's safety. Well, I had to do my duty as a Head-Fier and hear the L3000 to compare with the K701. They had an L3000 that belonged to the store owner available for demo.

I held the L3000 with trembling hands and much trepidation. My favorite headphone is currently the AD2000. Would the L3000 blow it away in my mind? It did not, but I thought the L3000 sounded amazing. It sounds very different from the AD2000; it is warmer, is less "airy" and has heavier and stronger bass.

After listening to the L3000 for a few minutes, my mouth fought through my wallet's defenses and I asked if I could get a good price. The Taiwan dollar has depreciated recently and in dollar terms the L3000 price was attractive.

The store still has L3000s available in sealed boxes. Maybe some other head-fiers' wallets would like to do battle?

My wallet has been crushed and pulverized and won't be moving for a long time.

Sweet. I don't know why, but I always picture the L3000 in my mind as being lime green
biggrin.gif
... must be thinking of another headphone. Anyway, I probably won't be doing that anymore.

I do like the look of woodies better than leather-ies, but those look very nice indeed...

Good pick, bluetin has a few L3000's left at around 2K new in box from what I have heard if anybody is looking.

My wallet is recovering from property taxes but I will have a pair of these by the end of the year, or a 007t.

That'd be the L3000G, though not exactly lime green...

I'm sorry, but I can't help myself smiling at your "story." May I query as to the % difference between the K701 to the leatherheads?

I too felt a similar pull, albeit from a different manufacturer. A month ago I "accidentally" happened across an audio shop in HK and thankfully it was at the end of my vacation.

Having already max'ed out one of the plastics, I thought I'll be realitively safe. As it was, it was but only barely. Downstair at that "evil" little shop laid a stockpile of AT's with AD2000, L3000 among them. Those other plastics in my back pocket were definitely sweating when I was quoted the L3000.

Then I saw the SR-007 and SRM-717. If it wasn't for the ridiculous amount of luggages I had to lug back which helped restored my sanity, I would have tipped. I guess I could have shipped them though, but the wait...

The thing is I now find EIFL can ship them even cheaper! I know where my tax return this year will be going...

EDIT: BTW, they look fantastic and enjoy!

ken36, please don't remind me of Team ATOWF. My wallet hates Team ATOWF. And the W5000 is due next month.

crypt@, I'm glad the story got a smile from you. Now, how about some sympathy?

You can always visit HK again, and bring recharged plastic. Shipping costs aren't that bad, either.

The K701, as well as the AD2000 and DT880, sounds very different from the L3000. I haven't heard anything like the L3000 before.

Also, I opened the box and listened to the L3000 in the store. After reading about a potential defect with the L3000 drivers, I used a couple test CDs to see if I could hear the defect. Some test tracks had some extremely low frequency sounds. I didn't hear anything wrong.

Heh, matey, that's some headphone collection you're building there... I see a bruised and battered wallet in your future.

Resistance is futile, soon W5000 would come and crush your wallet once more! Congradulation for the L3000, hope your woodie treats you well, until next time...

Actually, the promo picture for the L3000G is quite ugly. The green is not that bright. It's more neutral, understated and a tad "metalic?":

BTW... Congratulations!!!

The first set of photos they posted were. They looked like they'd had a horrible accident on Saint Patrick's Day...
