Today I went to the local audio shop to listen to the AKG K701 a second time. After sounding like an idiot in the "AKG K701 & K601 very brief impressions" thread http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showt...8&page=1&pp=20 I wanted to redeem myself and prove I could at least post something semi-useful.
So I gathered up what little courage I could muster and entered the "wallet-sucking" local audio shop. I asked if I could listen to the K701 again and this time I was prepared. I brought the ATH-AD2000 and DT880/Cardas to compare with the K701.
After listening for a while, I remarked to the salesperson that the sound signature of the K701 seemed similar to the AD2000 and DT880. All three are relatively bright and airy, although the K701 was slightly warmer and darker.
The salesperson said maybe I would be interested in the L3000, which has a very different sound signature. I've never heard the L3000, and was concerned about my wallet's safety. Well, I had to do my duty as a Head-Fier and hear the L3000 to compare with the K701. They had an L3000 that belonged to the store owner available for demo.
I held the L3000 with trembling hands and much trepidation. My favorite headphone is currently the AD2000. Would the L3000 blow it away in my mind? It did not, but I thought the L3000 sounded amazing. It sounds very different from the AD2000; it is warmer, is less "airy" and has heavier and stronger bass.
After listening to the L3000 for a few minutes, my mouth fought through my wallet's defenses and I asked if I could get a good price. The Taiwan dollar has depreciated recently and in dollar terms the L3000 price was attractive.
The store still has L3000s available in sealed boxes. Maybe some other head-fiers' wallets would like to do battle?
My wallet has been crushed and pulverized and won't be moving for a long time.
