A newer, better technology is always right around the corner. That's no reason not to buy now, since it'll always be a problem.

Also, last I checked 2010 (the publicly announced release date) isn't next year, unless I'm missing a few months of my life.

Microsoft has said they want to get back to their normal release cycle. XP was a freak occurrence for how long it was their main OS, and Microsoft ended up getting tied up in endless security updates for XP (XP was a nightmare for security, all the way until SP2).

2009 is when they hope to release Vienna, but I wouldn't expect it that early.

This was my thought.. XP was an anomoly, and every 2 1/2 to 3 years isn't that odd a release schedule for OS releases.

Hopefully MS will price it a bit more realistically next time, and less confusingly.
