After a couple of months, I can compare the V222 and V281. I wasn't planning to get both. I was looking for a V281 for almost 2 years. The moment the V222 became available I bought one. Months later I snagged a used V281.
Resolution is hard to pick here. I think the V222 might be more resolving (Especially bass notes and texture), but that's mostly due to its forward nature compared to the relaxed nature of the V281.
Soundstage width goes to the V281. The V281 has more space between instruments. Soundstage depth goes to the V222. It's like having a video game case straight V222, 90-degree rotation V281.
Imaging is the same case here. The V281 is like a stretched picture while the V222 is the original picture size. If I have to reference some amps are like the RNHP vs G111 imaging and sounds stage. Might be just the presentation that is making the V222 clearer overall.
V222 seems more resolving.
V222 is tighter and have more bass.
V222 more forward.
V222 clearer background.
V222 clearer mids.
V281 wider soundstage.
V281 more analog sounding.
V281 better timber.
V281 more power.
V281 pre-outs.
Music recommendations:
V222 POP, EDM, metal, and bassy music
V281 Classical, female vocals, and acoustic music.
Headphone:
The Focal clear OG with V222 slams crazy hard and tight. The V281 helps with the focal metallic timber.
I don't have any planars right now, but I think the V222 will make planars rumble like no other amp (within the price).
It was hard to decide which to keep. At one point I thought about selling both and getting the V550, but due to pairing, I will have to get a different DAC. Finally, decide to keep the V281 because is out of production and hard to get.
