Violectric DAC V850 - General Discussion and Impressions Thread

Indeed 😵 unbeatable price! ($1699)

I strictly need a slimmer/narrower (25cm max width) DAC, though, to go into my Hifi setup.
Then it is the Bifrost 2/64 or the Soekris 2541 which is exatly 25cm wide.

Edit: But if you find the space, trust me (bro), get the Yggi GS2.

Does anyone of the V850 owners have any experience with the Soekris 1541/2541 or Metrum Onyx/Jade or similar R2R DACs paired with the V281? Does an R2R DAC significantly improve the performance of the V281?
More generally, did anyone here compare the V850 and a Soekris F2F on any Violectric (222, 281, 550, 590,…)?

I am sure there's somewhere on this forum. The question of whether or not an upgrade from a v800 to a v850 is of much difference? I would assume that it's probably very small percentile. Have many of you decided to go with the Amp/ Dac combo instead of an V850?

According to Fried, the different is quite substantial between the V800 and 850 apparently.

Damn. I wish there was more communication with these guys on YouTube. They don't get enough screen time for the quality of the amp. Maybe that's a good thing cuz it's already super expensive in my books for me. However, other than the one reviewer can't think of his name right now, draw me a blank. No one else reviews the gear. Mind you some of it's like 10 years old. Okay, everyone wants the fancy new topping amps. That'll all be in landfills in 10 years. I think I'm going to have to start up a YouTube channel and review some of these old amps/dacs that are made like bricks.

I would like to know what is the big difference but they're not even making these anymore. So I guess only the people that find the hidden gems will actually be able to find out with their own ears. The rest will just have to take his word at.

for me, i think his word is pretty good.. enough for me to scramble for a V850.....

then again, if you have a V800 thats still a damn nice DAC. better than a lot of other DACs that cost a lot more than it.

I have a Soekris dac2541 as a loaner, here are my toughts:
These are tonally identical, organic and realistic sound (organic= lifelike, natural)
- Soekris does seems to have more detailed sound.
- Vio has a larger image
- Soekris has more impact, but vio hits with a larger volume
- Separation is not as simple to describe, Vio image is larger, and sound placement it easier, however Soekris has a cleaner sound
and as such instruments are cleaner in that narrow space
- Vio sounds vintage in comparison, but not in a bad way. The analogue approach is better suited for some.
- Midrange is identical

I will say that Soekris is the winner here, tough I'm not changing my DAC to it. V850 stacks nicely with my V222 :D
Just a remark: If there is time between dac changes, I would have a hard time to separate these two.
EDIT: After some more listening:
- Midrange still identical
- The detail goes like this: With Soe I notice a detail that I have not heard or focused on before, but then when I listen with Vio, it is there also, just did not hear it before.
- Vio sounds clearly smoother, and the vocals are slightly closer to you also.
- Bass is almost identical, cant even describe what is different with these two

I am listening Tool - Chocolade Chip Trip FLAC

Doing this comparison made me realize how hard DAC comparisons are...or my Stealths / Elites are just not detailed enough :D

Thanks so much for this @FinHifi ! That’s exactly the comparison I was after!

Would be great to hear the same for a comparison with the Holo Audio Cyan2 🤓

Thanks, both are excellent in my opinion. I actually listened Vio thinking it was Soekris, and was convinced that I need to upgrade my DAC.
Difference between these two is small, but Vio is definetly the smoother sounding one.

I have the Yggy+ GS2 and I have used the Soekris 2541. I didn't have them side by side, both pair well with the v281LE and v222. I'm passively interested in trying the Vio DACs. Just for the sake of matching and design.
The only downside of the Yggy is the size....

What do you think about V281LE? How good it is?

the Violectric DACs are excellent, i had an V800, and stepped up to the V850.... According to Fried, theres a considerable difference... then again the V800 is still a damn nice DAC. great performance from a compact unit.
