Venture Electronics VE Zen 2.0 impressions and discussion thread

Just got the Zen 2.0, and I'm not totally sure what to think of it yet...

It's very good compared to any IEMs or earbuds I've owned, in regards to clarity and presence, but I'm not sure I'm fond of the sound signature. There is a huge mid-bass emphasis without much extension, along with excellent mids and slightly rolled-back treble to my ears. I think the Monk+ has a wider soundstage. I like the Zen. A lot, but I feel like I'm missing something. It seems to change a lot with different amps, more so than most headphones. I've used it with my phone, which drives them comfortably, a Vali 2, and a Fiio E10k, and I think I actually like them best from the phone (ZTE Axon 7 - has a great DAC for a phone).

Any recommendations for a good amp pairing with the Zen 2.0?

I'm only a click away from getting an Onkyo DP-X1 to pair with my Balanced Zen 2.0 that are in the mail. My hope is that it can drive them well in balanced. I would rather not "stack" if I can avoid it.

Short comparison between standard Zen vs. Zen black

standard Zen + a bit deeper lows + open highs + better separation + a lot more focused hit + more accuracy + unveiled, closer vocals - muffled sound = Zen black

It feels as if sounds were nailed tight on a solid surface, relatively.

Interesting. This makes me want to re-cable my Zens even more... and they haven't even arrived yet. Lol.

How is the cable? Does it seem a little on the stiffer side vs the Standard Zen?

It surely is stiff and even can cause touch noise (not as big ones as in IEMs), but I'm getting accustomed to it.

Sooner or later I might come to be little conscious of the cable cause 'Good sound justifies everything' for me.

But even then, I won't be able to crumple the cable and put it in the pants pocket roughly. Cardas  requires respect :)

Just wondering how it compares to my Monk recabled headphones (wire stiffness, not in sound) ... I used 26AWG Toxic Cables SPC...and that is a bit on the stiff side as well.

Anyone using Zen 2.0 with iBasso DX200 DAP? Able to make the Zen 2.0 shine?

Hmm, my Zen 2.0 balanced seems to have developed a rattle in the right bud ... any ideas?

Is it only when playing music? Can you rattle it without it being plugged in? I'd shoot VE an email and see what they can do for you (if still under warranty).

Would a dragonfly red be able to drive these properly?

Zen are sensitive (even with their High Ω requirement). I don't know how they would synergise or anything, as AQ doesn't give enough information about their device.
