Unique Melody legacy - Latest Flagship 12BA CIEM

Very well said, malevolent. Went to stereo for refit of my brand new mage (second pair after I lost the first pair), I had a quick audition of legacy today too and totally agree with u. Coming from um mage, I'm glad um finally came up with something flat. I didn't like miracle for its emphasis of treble and bass and hollow mids, while mentor is better but it's still not able to bring up vocal nicely and still too bass focused. Legacy is perfectly balanced to my ears! Bass is lean, quick, detailed and rumble with very nice texture, treble is sparkly yet soothing to the ears, the mids... Damn sweet, finally um made a high end model that doesn't lose out the mids! It's forward enough to give vocals a lot of life!

Now the bad news is I regret I've just made a pair of mage... Sigh...

The highs on the Mentor and Legacy are truly stellar. They are well extended, with lots of sparkle and detail, but retain enough control to prevent any sibilance. This was what wowed me most when I auditioned the Mentor for the first time, and this excellent treble presentation is also present in the Legacy.

Anyway, it's a real shame that the Legacy is just a Stereo exclusive. It certainly looks like it has the capabilities to challenge other TOTL IEMs. In fact, like Boringz has confirmed, its technical aspects are a match for the K10, which is no easy feat, considering that the K10 is better received on Head-Fi than even the JH13 FP and Roxanne.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to auditioning the Legacy against the K10. Think it'll be a nice time comparing these 2 awesome IEMs.

I haven't been around here in a while. What's happened?

I'm not sure if this is what Kunlun meant, but this is my take on it.

I feel that Unique Melody has lost quite a bit of traction in the CIEM market of late. Their successor to the Miracle, the Mentor, was a solid, fun IEM that didn't generate enough enthusiasm in the market. Even though it has been out for about a year, it hasn't had its time in the spotlight yet (or if it ever will).

With the Legacy (and a 12 driver template), UM may be trying to reclaim that WOW factor that they've seemingly lost. This can be seen in their frantic efforts to introduce a flagship 12 driver IEM in the Maestro, Legacy and the Mason.

The UM Lab basically fell apart in the quality control and customer service departments. It got so bad that some of their dealers dropped them. I believe the dealers are back now, so that, combined with what could be a ciem that isn't a flop like the mentor and several before it and maybe UM will turn things around.

^^ that's a shame.  i'm almost at the point in my life where i can buy CIEMs without regret (which probably will happen in the next half a year or so) and i remember the hype surrounding UM when they first came out with the Mage, then the Miracle.  Miracle is still tempting to me, but for basically the same price, i can get JH13s.

Ok, UM screwed up my Mage's fit a few times and when they got it right there was channel balance issue, sounds leaning to the right side. It's crazy how an established ciem maker could make such mistake, and this is not the first time I encountered this issue with UM. Eventually, when I saw them got the fitting right I then placed an order to the Legacy asking them to use the exact same mold they used with my Mage. When they are done making the ciem, I got the Legacy together with my refitting Mage, this time they totally screwed up the driver and the L side of the ciem was muted! UM, what were you doing?! My Mage was on its way back to China for the fourth time!

Back to the topic, first impression of the Legacy, sounds fantastic. I don't know how to score them but I can put in some keywords to its characteristics.

Highs are extended as expected, no sibilance, snappy, quite close up almost as close as the mids, not much decay, slightly grainy, has good attacks, similar to Mentor, maybe a hint more prominent, could be due to the leaner bass. Note that the demo universal fit unit of Legacy sounds to have more treble, could because of more distant drivers position from our ear drums making them sound brighter and colder. The custom version to my ears having the right amount of treble.

Mids are forward, I love the positioning of the mids, vocals are close up, no "U" shaped and distant mids like the Miracle. This is by far the biggest difference with Mentor and Miracle. Mids are also smooth, a little wet, a little like how Shure will tune their mids. Full of details, my favourite part of the sound here.

Bass is lean, quick, not much decay, a little distant, goes very low, can hit very hard on bassy tracks. I like it's positioning too, it's right behind the treble and mids being the closest.

Sound stage is huge, happy with it. Seperation is great, this is expected with a setup of this many drivers. The Legacy just able to produce complex tracks effortlessly.

Overall, Legacy is a quick, kinda flat ciem and finally a ballanced ciem for me. I have tried many so called "ballanced" ciem and they end up not balanced at all, for instance the Miracle. if really wanna pick an area that stands out in Legacy, i'd say the mids, and maybe the bass.

I love this beast!

Does anyone know why the price has increased from 2099 for custom when they released it, to 2499 now?  It makes no sense at all as they still sell universal for the same price, and if you ask any of the staff at stereo they give varying and weak answers, like "probably due to increase in production cost" - honestly for such an expensive item and a fully unexplained price increase of $400, I am surprised they provide such a pathetic answer, they may as well just say to their customers face "we want $400 more from you"

I tried legacy for a few hours. a friend of mine lent it to me for a day.

here's quick review (with opus #2):

- legacy for me is a warm, dark, smooth and bassy. overall a fun iem
- everything for me is flat, in a good & smooth way. mids are not too forward, just there, high is perfect. low is good. no one is trying to outshine the others.
- fun iem, especially when u listen to a pop/mainstream song
- bass has good impact, but not over powered. everything not trying to outshine the others
- soundstage is huge. perhaps one of the largest that i've ever heard
- separation is there, noticeable but does not disturb the smoothness

overall i feel legacy is really good for pop/ mainstream song. I'm thinking to get one to pair with my KSE 1500
legacy for pop song
kse 1500 for my audiophile/jazz song

any thoughts?

Currently, I am also considering it. I had tried a few iem but feel Legacy is quite balance. I am still thinking if I shough commit to this as it will be one and only one custom iem for me. Is it worth? I just bought Sony XBA-N3ap and it is comparable to Legacy sound. Legacy is definitely better but not even 50% better. Sony XBA-N3ap is definitely worth. I see the interest in Legacy is not a lot from this thread.

I purchased Legacy back in 2017, they are great but I have had to get them refitted twice and continually have issues with custom fit IEMs, so considering selling them. Does anyone know if I can convert them to universal?
