Unique Melody IEM discussion thread(MEST, MEXT, Mentor, Mason, etc.)

I demoed 20+ iems, several being UM, but I possibly skipped them and others well over my budget to not degrade my intended purchase experience 😅
Also, I get confused with the Mavis, Maven, Macbeth, Merlin, Mentor names etc.
Last year I brought my 1Z, but this year opted for a lighter travel kit, which I regretted at times as synergy can be a fine line.
I read your post about MV1 too as I have the MV1 too. Just sharing because we do have Z1R, the Mest is great complimentary for Z1R, as Z1R is more musical, bass connoisseur, fun grande IEMs, perhaps a clean, highly technical with precise imaging will be nice?
I have Mest too and tey compliment each other. If you can demo Aful Cantor too, please demo them.
I love my TSMR Shock (yeah shockingly despite "cheaper" then others) but I modded them and need to fine tune (with the very sensitive dials) to perfection, so not sure if I would recommend them to someone that feel hassle to do some works with their IEM.
Goodluck and enjoy Japan!

Sorry about my "M" addiction.
Just realized and curious, is that intentional? 😁

Thanks very much.
I really like the Z1R, they were an easy choice having favoured Sony over the years, and the fact they were a hit has made them impossible to sell. I never wanted to admit though, there are times that I find the signature missing something. I am a frequency graph simpleton to be able to label or pinpoint what, but when I demoed the Mest Mkii (and a couple others - can't recall) I had that filled, so yes, complimentary.
I'm back home now, and unfortunately I got hit with the flu on the last couple of days, which was my e earphone shopping spree time. When I optimistically thought I had sweated it out overnight I dragged myself to e earphone to grab the only secondhand Mest Mkii, only to find out it had sold a while back.
Regarding the M names, I realized there is the 3D Terminator which breaks the pattern.

Ouch sorry to hear that, speedy recovery brother and for the Mest mkII, you'll have another chance to grab em. Yeah Sony IEMs are strong line ups and I do have several with me and their big name is proofed.

3D terminator is also "M" just written 90 degrees clockwise :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Thanks again.
I totally missed the rotated 3 - that's some da Vinci code stuff there 😄

I live in a small country with minimal availability of HeadFi gear, and blow me down, a local store has a pre-order for it at one of the lowest prices by a fair margin. I'll enquire tomorrow and see about making it happen.

They aren't recessed, on the IEM side they are flush. Same as the MKII, it's the included cable which has plugs for recessed connectors.

I don't get why, either... I guess this way the cable is more versatile, because it can also fit other IEMs that have a recessed connector. But still, out of the box, it looks off... Why not make the IEM side recessed? Why not use a flush connector for the included cable?

i selling mest MK2, solaris, fat freq maestro mini, and buy the mentor.... assinature of mentor is similar V shaped compared to mest ?

in my fast experience with mentor, the mids are awesome, the treble is more polite compared to mest mk2, and less agressive, and even more holographyc.

Hi everyone, first time posting here.
Have anybody tried to cut the stem of a very sticky silicon tip to make it shorter so it exposes the whole tip of the MKII?
I think I have an idea of how a custom version of this iem might sound like doing this with the tips, which allows me to shove it as deep as I can having a whole contact with the iem. With other tips (be it widebore or normal ones) I felt that there was big treble peak and it made the timbre a bit hollow; doing this with the silicon tips made it sound fuller on the high-mids, no harssness on the top end, and the sub-bass level still preserved.
This really reminded me of the problem with the Z1R, which If you didnt get it deep enough and didnt have a good seal, some people would find its treble peaky and mids hollow.
For anyone interested, these eartips are the Angelears AE100 and they're quite cheap on Aliexpress.

I considered doing that to some Spinfit W1, they are very grippy and the stem is very long.

The best fit I've gotten so far has been with tips that came from, of all things, a particular set of cheap TWS earbuds. Nothing special: black silicone, soft, not sticky. They didn't work very well with the TWS. But with the MKII, they fit me like no other. I went so far as to hunt down another set of those buds just to have a spare of the tips in the same size.

I guess it pays off to try as many tips as you can.

I started by cutting regular tips, but the seal was not good enough for the bass.
I regularly use L size tips, but with the sticky silicon tips like softear, xelastec, and so on, I tried to use a cut S size tip like in the photo, so I could shove it as deep as I comfortably could.
It's actually very nice; the seal is very deep, the soundstage is still very large with the sub-bass, and there's more isolation that with other non-sticky tips that I tried with.
