That's because the overwhelming majority of music is 16/44.1. Even FLAC.

There that is my face -.-

also Mad lust how are the Dt 990s for mids bass, is the 600 ohm better then the 250? I looked at a Frq graph and the 250 had more bass up until about 130 hrz or so then it rolled off mildly, where as the 600 ohm had less bass till about 130 hrz and the it didn't roll off until about 300 or so and that roll of was rather steep

Point being :3 is the 600 ohm worth it seeing as it cost almost twice as much as the 250 version?

I haven't tested the 250ohm DT990 (well, other than the Pro model which sounds a bit different).

I did however own the 32ohm and 600ohm, and they are nearly identical, give or take some refinement here or there. I'd get the 250ohm if it's cheaper. Willing to bet it's like the 32ohm in which it's within 5% the same as the 600ohm, and the 250ohm is better equipped to be driven by a lot more things better than the 600ohm, which will sound weak if it isn't given a lot of power.

The DT990s has amazing bass for an open can. Actually considering selling my HE400 and going back to the DT990/32 and calling it a day. The DT990 has the bass presence I want without EQ, even if it's inferior to the HE400.

Yea well the 990 is a "bass head" can where as the HE 400 is not, I still want the HE 500, and it's nice to hear the two are the same. I do however want some refinement, but hopefully the 250 will be more refined than the 32 as I like good bass detail <3

Thanks again ^^

The DT990/32 was like 95% the same as the 600ohm. I doubt you'll notice the difference unless you micro analyze everything, instead of just enjoying them. The DT990s are the longest pair of cans I owned, and I'm telling you, they're so similar, it's not worth spending so much more for the 600ohm, especially if you don't have a beefy amp for them. A weakly driven 600ohm will sound worse than a properly driven 32ohm. Just saying. If the only amps you have are the ones on your list, you're doing yourself a huge disservive by getting the 600ohm.

Boy I wouldn't be able to go back to the DT990 premium after the HE-400.  DT990 sounds thin and plasticy in comparison, and the treble does impede a lot.  You're not missing much bass either.  Slightly phatter in the mid-bass on the DT990, but less sub-bass.

It's not slightly to me. The DT990's bass presence is more enjoyable to me. Yes, the HE-400 is technically superior on pretty much all fronts, yet I prefer the DT990 for sheer enjoyment. It's like Matt choosing the HD650 over the HE-400, due to enjoying it more.

That and I have the E17, which I can reduce the DT990's treble with. I prefer reductive EQ, than boosting. And I didn't even have to EQ the DT990/32. I was fine with it's treble. I actually found the HE400's treble more fatiguing off the E17 than the DT990/32. Not that either were fatiguing to me.

I think the cMoy could drive it, I have an 18V version but yea the 250 would be a better purchase

Well you say that and then Mad Lust says the oppisite, I trust her judgment more tbh, plus I want to get the HE-500 at some point so no reason to get HE 400

In addition I getting the dt990 for mid bass only, I have XB1000 for Sub bass, and once more I've heard that the HE 400 is darker hence it's going to mask the sound a little, which is why the Highs don't seem to "impede"  as much

I still say Dt 990 Pro over Pro 900 any and every day, not paying $300+ for something with rolls off like the Pro has, and I'm not a

Yea man seriously look at that, pro 990 has much more bass and doesn't have those insane roll offs like the Pro 900 and He 400, in addition the HE-500 really seems worth the jump in price to me, and I mean that as a replacement for my Dt 880, I do love that flat bass line response in the HE's though! But neither of them are Bass Head cans, in which detail and impact are kings <3

There's a difference between driving it, and driving it WELL. Getting the 600ohm is just stupid if you're not getting a desktop amp for it.

And yes, I prefer the DT990 over the Pro 900 by quite a bit.

What do you think of a Cowon X2 and Fiio E17 combo? I also agree, sheer enjoyment and EQ reduce is key, on my FooBar I love the "auto level" as it auto eq reduces for me, and it does work better to quit as opposed to make louder

I think an e17 Cowon X2 would work pretty well... as a pure Bass Head Portable rig it should be plenty [but that HE-500 is gonna need an Hm 802 xD gonna go BIG on that one lol]

Yea I kinda figured that, and I really don't like the Pro 900 due simply to how fickle ppl describe it with... the whole concept of it just does not appeal to me, where as Byerdyanmic really seems to have real consistancy in it;s product expections [one more day till 880 2r0's arrive :D] Ok time ti make a sign for the UPS guy and get to sleep! [Or just browse head fi on my andriod <3]

A shame.  I'm ok if you don't want to get them if you're interested in the HE-500 in the future, I won't try to sway your opinion.  Do not try to use the headroom graphs to justify their sound signatures though.  For starters they're horribly level matched as well.

Here's better representations.

Also, while the DT990 and Pro900 have about the same bass roll-off as according to the headroom graphs, you'll most likely get more of it in practice with the Pro900, as it is a closed headphone.  The bass will linger longer and keep an adequate pressure.

Seeing as I directly A/B'd the HE-400 with the DT990 600Ω on both the LDMKII before I sold it off, and the O2, to get different tastes of what desktop amps could do for either headphone, I do have to say the DT990's mid-bass isn't all that much more impactful or powerful, just thicker.  So with that said, I'd probably lean towards the pro version as well.

As a back up plan in case i end up not liking the Pro 900 (It's much to early to tell, only had them for a week) I would like to know the alternatives.

So just in case, I have narrowed it down to:

Denon AH-D2000
HiFi Man HE-400
M-Audio Q40
Beyerdynamic DT 990 (32ohm)

Which do you recommend, i would at least like to keep some bass as a novelty of sorts. I am really entertaining the idea of the HE-400 and it's special drivers, but at the same time the fail-safeness of the D2000, or perhaps the unique diamond in the rough Q40....or the Pro 900's brother the DT 990....Very torn between all of them.

@tm raven

Where r u getting ur data from, im really not a fan of headroom tbh

And i have heard good things about the 400 mainly that its machine d where as the 500 is hand built so i may try them,.and i like.softer bass ober.hrder so thicker sounds.good xD

I'm starting to notice the top of the Pro 900 headband is painfull sometimes...grrr

And the bass, I don't know...I'm confused, if this headphone is supposed to have the most mid bass ever then why am i not all that impressed even with an amp. I am far from calling it earth shaking or brain rattling...it's there sure and it's slightly punchy, okay. It really varies with songs and volume, sometimes i am left wanting more, am i expecting to much from headphones or something? Am i mistaking wanting mid-bass for wanting sub-bass?
