I had a bit of a poke at mine but even a needle wasn't thin enough to fit in the hole. I believe at the time someone recommended stripping a wire and using a single strand of copper but I never got around to it in the end.
I have had some pretty positive results by varying sources and even changing the ear tips can make a huge difference. I used to find them a bit bass light but I seem to have got used to their sound now.
I was just curious how you felt the pinhole being blocked had changed the sound? As I bought mine used I have never experienced them unblocked if you like.
