After reading I understand that the most mentioned mod is blocking the pinhole. However, I'm still confused, does it increase the amount of bass or actually makes them more neutral?

Another mod is to saw off 1.5mm from the nozzle's business end to restore the TF10's snap and PRaT as per a comment at http://www.headfonia.com/thoughts-on-the-ultimate-ears-ue900/.

Im also looking for a mod that will allow to wear them wires down. Any ideas here?

I know the pin hole bore discussion was confusing at best. From what I can gather the hole blocks naturally with normal use byt could be blocked sooner using candle wax or something else. This was supposed to reduce the bass leading to a more neutral and balanced sound. I bought mine used so assume the hole was already blocked as the sound was pretty neutral coming direct from my Note 3. I tried to unblock mine to increase the bass but even a needle was too large to fit in the hole. Someone suggested I tried individual copper wires from a cable but never got around to it. Imo sound improves when using an Apple device which I think they were probably designed for. They also sound really good using Flac files through the e18. I tried using Sony hybrid tips which others claimed improved bass but felt I got better results from the stock tips. I'd love to get a little more of the tf10 sound but not likely to take a hack saw to them any time soon ☺

Did you try to use TF10 tips? It makes sound more musical less mid forward and more V shaped to me. However, if your pin hole is blocked, I think there is no way to increase the bass, especially sub-bass. Also good copper cable give the good bass punch (mid-bass) and silver cable add a little more sub-bass. Some copper cables makes the mids smoother, it also help a little to reduce the mids.

Could someone try the sawing off mod? If it will indeed improve the bass it will be a very useful mod.

I think as blocking of the pinhole decreases the bass and makes a flat neutral signature, so making the hole bigger, what seemingly the mod does, might have an opposite effect, and produce a sound similar to TF10.

I think you're probably more likely to get a response to the question "has anyone tried the sawing mod" and if so, "what does it sound like?". Expectindlg someone else to attempt a potentially earphone destroying mod on the basis that you have heard this could be a good idea is probably a big ask imo.

I've not tried the tf10 tips but will on your recommendation. I'll report back my findings.

One of my favorite mods for the UE900 is Knowles green filter, which has less resistance and blocking the pinhole. And paired with a silver plated cable. Green filter is 1500 ohm vs. the stock red which is supposed to be 2200 ohms. Makes the midrange really clear and fast. Probably the fastest and cleanest I've ever heard out of any earphone. The bass is still there, but I wouldn't say it's better than stock, just faster and snappier.

These were the silver plated cables I was using.

The fiio is brighter than the lunashops.

Something's really impressive of the midrange and treble in this configuration. Really clear and fast. Not harsh at all either. Didn't think the UE had it in it.

Ive never come across those filters before, how are they used?

The filters are in the nozzle. Remove the existing ones (mine have a metal ring and then a filter underneath). Insert the new ones.

I use this tool

Knowles might make a tool too.

I'm not the one who made the proposal, I just brought it here for a discussion and added my hypothetical opinion. Well, I think I could be the second guinea pig, if anyone else would be the first and will confirm that it gives more bass and making it tf10-ish.

BTW: Despite ue's claims that it cannot be used wire down, I found out that at least with t-400 complies I can use them that way if switch left to right. That becomes more comfortable too if listening while riding a motorcycle, because the controls are on the left (right hand is one the gas). Please do be careful though, as the outside noise is pretty blocked. However in light traffic in rural areas that's an option. Just my two cents.

I tried it the other day, I found 15mm not quite enough so ended up sawing off about 20mm to get the real tf10 goodness. The silicone tips don't stay on so good these days but well worth fishing them out of your ears for the improvement in sound. I also found drilling a massive hole in the side acted as a bass port and only improved things further. Just be careful not to drill through the armatures like I did on my first attempt...oopsy. Anyway your turn now buddy!

*Please note all of the above post may definitely not be in any way even slightly true

Haha, real funny. It would have been a ridiculous proposal to saw off 1.5 mm, however people have been adding earwax/removing earwax to a small hole in ue 900 and all commented that it changed the signature.

Just palying about with my ue900. I tried the foam tips and found they really imorived the bass but muddied up the mid range and lost the top end sparkle. So I tried the tf10 tips not really seeing how much difference they could make to the stock silcone tips. What a suprise, they really do accentuate the bass whilst still retaining the treble sparkle. Great suggestion!

Ok, Google ain't helping me much, so has anyone got a method for unblocking the pin hole on these UE900's?

One of mine is and I need to unblock it. Have to say, given the way ears work with wax, this has to be the stupidest design for a headphone of all time.

Cheers.
