It's the cheapest of its type, but it works great. Before any record gets played on my turntable, it gets washed in the EV-1. No exceptions. Once you get your records clean, using a carbon fiber brush (like the Audioquest or Hunt EDA, I use the Hunt) is enough to keep them clean for as much as six months if you play them regularly.

+1 regarding significance of wet vacuum cleaning. Kabusa is a very good supplier for vynil needs - almost forgot this one. Reason? Very few USA products have CE certificate for Europe - no CE certificate, no import allowed. US power plug is all customer officer has to see...normally game over. Does yours carry any CE sign ?

The EV-1 does not have a built in vacuum and is not electrically powered. You connect it to your household vacuum instead.

Not that I don't think the 17 is a good machine, but what makes you think the 16.5 is too much hassle?  It really is pretty hassle free...    The only thing that the 17 that the 16.5 doesn't is apply the cleaning fluid, which is simply a matter of squirting form a spray bottle, so about as easy as it gets.  Anyway, just throwing that out there.
 
I feel that the money I spent on the 16.5 was the best money I've spent on any part of my analog set up.  Playback is quieter and dynamics are improved; simply put analog playback was taken to a whole new level for me when I started using  the VPI cleaning machine.  Yes, I am sure I could have gotten the same results manually, but it's a no brainer with the cleaning machine.  I wouldn't hesitate to spend as much or more on the cleaning machine as you did on your table.  That cleaner will be with you as you upgrade tables.

The 16.5 is great. It deep cleaned my vinyls when I had a TT, a VPI 19 Mk IV.  Ofcourse the 17 is better but also more expensive. If you have a vinyl collection a really good cleaner is as essential as a good turntable.

Ultrasonic makes a lot of sense for vinyl cleaning!  That's an interesting, and expensive machine.

That is quite a machine. I upgraded from my 16.5 to a 17 and am very happy I did. The cleaning process is easier and faster with the 17.

Once-upom-a-time I worked in micro electronics plant. There was perhaps the ultimate "RCM" - ultrasonic with freon 113 to clean silicone dies. Unfortunately, freon is the last thing one wants from ecological point of view, will clean but like nothing else. Therefore is the machine mentioned all the more commendable, as it achieves almost the same results but with nature friendly liquid. It is not unreasonably expensive, which unfortunately still does not put it on my radar of purchases anytime soon. > wish list !

Depends on what is one using machine for. For home, cleaning a few records a day - almost anything will do. With little more or little less hassle.
 
If you are faced with say 100 LPs daily, both sides at once machines do make sense. As does the quietness of the vacuum part of the machine - it is not loud from the perspective of onlooking visitor/friend/customer, but for the operator it does get pretty noisy. Please bear in mind not all records can be vacuum cleaned in a single "pass" - there will be always some spots on record that for some reason do not "wet" properly and require repeated or prolonged contact with cleaning solution - MUCH prolonging the time needed with normal records. You have to continously watch the surface of the record on the RCM in order to spot any such problems - requiring you to be quite close to the RCM.

Sometimes a good vinyl cleaner is cheaper than an expensive MC cartridge. Makes your stylus last a little longer.
