Dyou think it'd be worth $50 hooked up to a 70s starter turntable, Technics SL-BD22 or Kenwood KD3070? What did you prefer instead?

Hello. I seem to hear some noise that sound like distortion on the left side. I know it's not my headphone cause I tried it on my other setup (digital playback) and it's fine. I will try another tube in my amplifier but could this be a cartridge problem? it happens on different albums and seems to be the low's (Bass).

That sounds like a it might be a cartridge alignment problem, in that the azimuth may not have been set correctly.  Did you use some kind of alignment disc/protractor to adjust that? It could also be that the antiskate is too low.

That's the only phono stage that I've tried in that price category. It really wasn't too bad with the music playing but the noise floor was quite audible when it wasn't.

I have a Pioneer PL41 that needs a new cartridge because I'm hearing this constant unbearable hum. Is it a good idea to just sell this and buy maybe a Music Hall(Looking at MMF 2.2) turntable for $400? Please help I need input.

The PL41 is a very nice turntable. If its working, I would definitely not sell it. Is the hum a new issue? Have you checked to make sure the ground wire from the turntable is attached firmly to your phono preamp or your amp/receiver?

Nice pic. My cousin songwrites for kpop. I just read something about RF interference. Some guy was near a radio tower and couldn't get away from the hum it was causing in his preamp, and at certain points in his room it was louder than the music. He wrapped it in tin foil or something. Just a thought, probably unrelated.

This turntable hasn't been used since the 80s and I haven't done anything because I don't have money for a turntable yet but the seller gave me two cartridges with it. The first one attached to the turntable had deteriorated and it wouldn't stay still so I took it out. With that one I think there wasn't a hum but a small hiss. I replaced it with the second cartridge and it plays music but the hum was louder. The ground is already attached to the amplifier and it is firmly secure.

Reaqter, what did he wrap? I'm not sure if I can wrap the cartridge with foil.

Also I'm thinking of getting a shure m97xe cartridge to use for this. It should work right? The cartridge can be removed with the shell by turning and then using a screw driver and attaching the wires. I can't remember what's its called right now.

Yes, the PL41 has a universal headshell where the cartridge is mounted, and these are removable.

Are all four of the small wires that connect the headshell to the cartridge also attached well? And is the headshell screwed firmly onto the tonearm with the rotating "collar"? Also, when you changed cartridges/headshells, did you re-balance the arm?

I looked at it right now and yes but it does seem like the needle and the metal around it is a bit rusty? Do you think this can be the reason for the hum? Also how do I properly rebalance the tone arm I'm not quite sure if I did it right. I just turned the knob and made sure it wasn't heavy for the vinyl.

Thanks so much I really want this to work soon I'd love to have the vinyls I bought played.

Wait, okay wow just wow. I found what the culprit is. It's the RCA cable!! I was puzzled because the hum went to the right driver of my headphone rather than the usual left. I moved the RCA cables and bam now it doesn't produce the hum. I have a question though, will it be difficult to recable this? It seems like the wire is loose from it's base so it'd be nice if I can replace it.
 
It seems like the needle is doing just fine even if it's a bit dirty.
