Look for a used Singlepower amp. Don't buy new; you'll save 50% or more with a used amp. Even if you have to completely retube it, you still come out ahead.

I did not (yet) compare it to my xcan, but it is very good with my laptop playing mp3 files, compared to connecting the headpones directly to the laptop.
