Would transfering music on USB 1.1 be extremely slow compared to 2.0? Would I be able to stand it, or would it be like waiting hours to get a few gigs on?

do you use windows 95? :p afaik every computer with windows 98 or higher and an usb 2.0 card (cost 20$) should support usb 2.0

Yeah - USB 1.1 is bearable only on smaller flash players. I bought my GF a nice cheap wee little Sigmatel unit for her last birthday (and a dandy pair of Koss KSC55, but thats another thread), its only 256mb but it is unfortunetly 1.1.

It takes around 4-5 minutes to fill it - which is passable as she normally ends up doing it to an album at a time. You could do a couple of gigs of music without a problem, but you sure would want to have booked in a good hour well in advance.

would just buying a cable that has firewire on one end and the i'link on the other end work? or would it have to be some special type.

I'd like to know that too, in case I ever wanted to pick up an IHP to use with my powerbook which has firewire, but unfortunately only USB 1.1

My experience with USB 1.1 and my iRiver is as follows:
With my 350MHz iMac, I do a little over 2GB per hour, constantly for extended periods of time.
With my 700MHz Dell laptop, I do about 2GB an hour, which is not a speed maintained over longer periods of time like 3 hours. In 3 hours, it seems to do less than 5GB. Probably just a crappy laptop.
Make of it what you will. Some have said it takes them half an hour just for 128Mb. I personally don't think it's that bad after you've done the first big load of MP3s though. Albums of 100MB only take a minute or two if you're not doing anything else with the drive. That is unless you've got an 80 or 100GB collection and are constantly switching it out completely.

usb1.1 is 12 megabits per second.

usb2 is 480 megabits per second.

remember, there are 8 bits in a byte, so at optimum speed (which never really happens w/ usb for a number of reasons)

you'll get about 1.5 megabyte/s for usb1.1 and 60MB/s for usb2

short answer, don't use usb1.1

if you can upgrade your machine, use usb2...even better would be firewire (aka i.link aka 1394) that doesn't have as high of an optimum speed (400Mb/s vs 480) but it has a higer bandwith.

this means you can use the ipod as an external HD, play songs off itunes and update the ipod at the same time and the transfer only slows down the rate of transfer slightly without affecting the music playback.

if you try to do this with usb2, it'll be choppy, lossy, and might even crash the computer depending on the rest of your hardware.

edit:
you can upgrade laptops by buying a pcmcia card (aka PC card) for either technology (usb2 or firewire), and this is a good method for either apple laptops with a pc card slot or IBM compatibles

I don't think it works that way. The Iriver would have to be firewire compatible and it isn't, but correct me if I'm wrong that you could transfer it with a firewire cable to usb converter.
