Toranku's Thoughts and Reviews (and target EQ filters!)

@toranku Do you have any personal favorite headphones?

I personally own a pair of AKG K371 for general desktop usage. While I think there are a lot of good or great headphones out there, none of them even come close to approaching excellence, bar the HE1. I have heard a lot of headphones but never really talked about any.

Here's a list of headphones I enjoy:
-HD800S: Bright-tilted tonality but wonderful imaging.

-ADX5000: Slightly wonky tuning but great texture and speed.

-Ananda: Solid tonality

-K371: Somewhat like the ER2 of headphones. Well tuned with drawbacks such as resolution but makes for a cheap and great monitor.

-HE1: Great tone, crazy imaging.

i.e., headphones underperform earphones? Have you heard any of Focal's offerings, by any chance?

Not at all, from a technical standpoint its very difficult for an IEM to outperform a headphone. It's just that headphones are so darn hard to tune properly to get a great tonality.

Have heard every single focal except the newly released Radiance.

Interesting, maybe it's the big drivers. Not a fan of Focal's tuning then?

Of all the focals I'd pick Utopia and Elex. They are the least wonky tonally.

Hi @toranku , it is sad to see you not reviewing and providing impressions formally anymore. You also didn't give me a chance to fire you from our Podcast show.

Oh, this is my 2,000th post on headfi. Maybe I should quit audio too.

Tried a few seconds of M7 yesterday and surprise surprise, i might prefer M7 tonality than M9. I find it more balance and the vocals sounds clearer.

You’re not the only one who prefers the M7.

Do you have any opinions on the HD600 & ATH-R70x?

I find HD600 to have a too elevated uppermidrange (2-4k). Tracks can sometimes sound too shouty and forward for this reason. HD650/6XX has too much warmth. There needs to be an in-between. Anyway, both roll off in the subbass so they're not all too exciting.

R70X is pretty good but a little bit boring for me. Its solidly tuned to be neutral.

Cheers. What do you think of the Shure SRH440 versus your K371?

Have you by any chance heard of the AKG K361 ? If so how are they in comparison to the K371?

Thanks

I've said this before. M7 is also one IEM you can crank up and not get dizzy.

Indeed, i found m7 is the most balanced and mid forward between the big Sony trio, its very balance and nice when you listen on higher volume. Just if you have listen to Z1R bass, ugh.. Definitely no way to go back.
Still love my m7 though

I might prefer M7 over Z1R as well. I prefer a full-bodied mids over Z1R bass cannons. Even the Z1R is well controlled, mids are noticeably thin to me.
