Top 6 greatest songs ever?
Dec 20, 2011 at 2:40 AM Post #32 of 68
I'm not sure if I can get 6 I'd definitively say are my favorites, but I'll try:

R.E.M. "Wolves Lower" (This is my favorite song of all time, but the rest aren't in any particular order)

This was the first song I ever loved and, to this very day, I think it's played a large part in defining my taste in music.

New Order "Age of Consent"

Joy Division/New Order "Ceremony"

Laura Marling "Sophia"

Talking Heads "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)"

At this point there are hundreds of things I want to post, so I'll just throw out something different from the preceding choices:

Susumu Hirasawa "Grandfatherly Wind"

Man, this could be the 100 best songs thread, and maybe then I wouldn't feel bad about my choices; but alas:

(in no order)

Funkadelic - Maggot brain (I'm really surprised no one’s listed this one...such soul--guitar solo)
Dax Johnson - A moment in the life of me (Solo Piano)
maybeshewill - Not for the want of trying (Post-rock)
Between the buried and me - mordecai  (Metal)
Jedi mind tricks - shadow business (Hip-Hop)
Drive By Truckers - G*dd*mn lonely love (Southern rock/alt country) *unsure of the swearing policy here*

90s rock/pop being my guilty pleasure immediately wanted to be included in the form of runaway train, breakfast at tiffany's, or Pearl Jam; but then I went back and forth between choosing my favorite songs from different genres I believe would be accessible to others, and choosing the top six songs I'd want available if stuck on an island.  I believe the above is a conglomeration of the two plans, if it's not a complete failure.

*genres listed in case some people want to YouTube the songs, and believe that listening to "insert genre here" is how the Devil gets inside you.

Without certain criteria by  which to rate songs (recording quality? cultural significance? text meaningfulness?), and without actually having a list of my all-time favourites (hmm, perhaps I should start one), I'm gonna go random-picking among the songs I've really enjoyed (in different senses). Hopefully, someone enjoyes them, too (the list not ordered in any way):

Nickelback - Rockstar
Ice Cube - Do Ya Thang
Chris Jones - Darlin' Corey
Frank Sinatra - Chicago
David Francey - Banks Of the Seaway
Enya - Amarantine (tough choice, I really-really like about 50% of her songs...)

P. S. +1 for Travelling Riverside Blues
P. P. S. Are we only supposed to post actual songs, or any musical compositions?.. I could pick another 6 electronic and instrumental compositions then :)

So many.

Burt Bacharachs' "Walk On By" has been covered by so many artists.
And so is Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale".
Then there's "Moon River" also.
Let's not forget the Beatles' "Til There Was You".
How about Stevie Wonder's "Til You Come Back To Me" and Aretha Franklin's version of it?
Even The Ramones covered "What A Wonderful World".
