Ditto. Great comments Eyeteeth, and the first part of your post makes me interested in Undertow despite exactly as I perceived it, quite one-toned. Great comparison with other great bands!

I must say I started with Tool by just being curious about the magnificent cover in their Lateralus album. I still remember the day I saw that album in a Target store, with the electronic circuit like diagram on the back. I wondered what that album would sound like, and why I had never heard of them. This was quite a few years ago. I was living in Pensacola FL back then. It turns out Target had massive numbers of Lateralus albums because Tool was coming to Pensacola on tour in a few weeks. I missed that concert because I knew nothing about them. To my surprise, the albums quickly sold out. Then I heard their music (I think first song I heard of them was Schism on the Pensacola radio during that time) and regretted to the bones having missed that concert.

After basically learning every second of Lateralus I started listening to Aenima. I quickly liked it a lot. I know when an album gets to me because after a few listenings (sometimes just one listen) I realize specific tunes, harmonies, and rhytms play back on their own in my memory days or weeks later. Almost singing to me from my memory, urging me to listen to those tunes and rhytms and harmonies again carefully, as if I had something to learn just from their flowing in my ears. This happened to me shortly after first listening to both Lateralus and Aenima. Same happened to me not long ago with a very different genre and sound, the exquisite voice of Madeleine Peyroux. Same has happened to me with Bjork, with some jazz and lyrical voices, and with some classical music, particularly Chopin.

I have been to a concert of A Perfect Circle (also in Pensacola FL), but haven't yet been to any Tool concert. That together with a Bjork's concert are among the "most dos" in my lifelong list right now.

eyeteeth and rsaavedra, wonderful posts! I really enjoyed reading them. I started out in a similar fashion as eyeteeth, with Undertow being the first album I heard. The first song I heard was actually Ticks and Leeches, and I really liked the anger and emotion behind it, so my friend mentioned that I should borrow Undertow and give it a listen.

Just like everyone says, it took time to grow on me. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it was different. I didn't know how or why, but it made me feel different than other bands of similar genres. I think eyeteeth hit the nail on the head
wink.gif

From then on, I was hooked. I quickly noticed how they progressed and matured into a more progressive band from songs like Forty Six & 2, Push It, and Third Eye. It seems they became more experimental, and let the music wander a bit more. This obviously becomes evident when you listen to Lateralus. The final three songs always remind me of the album Meddle, by Pink Floyd. It seemed like these songs didn't belong on the album, just like Echoes from Meddle. They are wonderful songs of course, but covered such a broad range of feelings and emotions, that they feel like an entire album by themselves.

Oh, and just to gloat a bit...I found a mint copy of Salival (DVD) at a used record store this weekend for $16. My jaw dropped, and I couldn't believe I had just completed my Tool collection for way less then what it goes for on Ebay.

For those who "don't get" Tool, I wonder if the lyrics and sounds of the song Disposition in Lateralus might entice them to Tool's excellence and mystery, and I would also like to say poetry.

This is not typical Tool rage at all though, it is a rather soothing song. Disposition lasts 4:46 mins, the landscape of sounds in the background (reportedly similar to some of King Krimson's) is just mesmerizing and pleasant. And the lyrics are just this, this is it:

Mention this to me.
Mention something, mention anything..
And watch the weather change.

Another song that seems to encompass a good variety of change and emotion is the live version of Push It, from the Salival album. It goes from a very soothing and simple guitar riff, Maynard's mezmerizing vocals, and some light toms...to this all out barrage and an incredible ending/climax. Definately a song to check out

And for those who aren't aware, the band asked King Crimson to open some shows for them on the Lateralus tour, and acknowledged Fripp & the bands influence on them. Fripp even did some Soundscapes during one of Tools songs on the shows they opened.

I'm an old guy, and came to Tool after hearing the song Aenima somewhere. I bought the album and liked it a lot. I picked up Salival and Lateralus and have enjoyed them as well. Someone above said that they never liked progressive because of its lack of emotion. I think for me, a long ago prog fan, that Tool is finally showing what the offspring of that music, when combined with metal and other recent genres, can be. Complex, hard rocking music with a social and personal conscience . I've read some of the mystical stuff they have written and that they get from others on their website, but am never sure if it's a put-on or not. But I know it was great, when I saw them in 2001, that Maynard was able to get everyone to chant "Think for yourself, question authority" and then had to explain why they shouldn't be chanting.

As for getting Tool - just listen. And if it doesn't happen for you, no big deal. Think for yourself. Maynard himself would probably tell you to listen to something else if you don't get into them.

Great comments about one of the greatest rock bands of our generation. I started listening to Tool by chance in early 1997. There was a short documentary about the band on Viva in Germany and some clips of Tool live with Maynard singing with two mic's, face paint, etc......lucky for me I found out that Tool were playing live in Berlin (where I was living at the time) around a week later. I bought my tickets and Aenima the next day and the rest is history. Aenima is a very special album for me, and the song third eye obviously as my screen name testifies. I do feel that Lateralus is an even further progression, yet somehow, I still feel that the best is yet to come from this band. A concept double album, like The Wall would be something that I would really look forward to.

Thanks for the kind words rsaavedra & Thaddy.

I saw TOOL on the Lateralus tour, ten feet front front and centre. An altogether ten hour standing torture test of waiting outside and inside. They opened with Sober.
icon10.gif

My favourite audio of the unofficial releases is the
LIVE in STUDIO HILVERSUM, HOLLAND radio 2 meter sessions, March 5 1994.
01 - Sober
02 - 4°
03 - Intolerance
04 - Prison Sex
The atmosphere isn't there but a real understanding of the power of Maynard's voice is delivered (4° kills!). Which reminds me that I never did complete my compilation of the very best performance of each song of the Lateralus tour as I had WAV recordings of every show. I was going to submit it to TOOL for their consideration (as well as earlier material). I never understood why official concert CDs were of a single show rather than the best examples of songs.

As for making the comparison to Zeppelin, I will say one example being the guitar of 'Reflection' (I was never impressed by speed/pyrotechnics as much as composition), from near the 7:00 mark to the end, to have involved me more than any other guitar work since 1976's Jimmy Page's 'Achilles Last Stand'. I know it seems a little silly to compare (Achilles is superior).

WOW, Tool has jammed all over the place!!!!!

Eyeteeth I think that's a good idea, the compilation of best interpretation for each song across all tours. Only thing, for particular songs there might be disagreement as to which interpretation was best, drummer might say one thing, while guitarrist or Maynard may say another. But the idea in itself is great, I think you should contact them about it.

PD. There's the concert I missed, Pensacola FL, August 1 2002.

Since we seem to have a fresh new Tool thread...has anyone heard anything about the new album?

The rumor is that the Live DVD comes out around October, while the album debuts in January.

These were both tremendous shows. That's a cool idea about doing a compilation of the best take of each track. However, presumably most of the recordings of the shows are AUDs, unfortunately sound quality will vary wildly, which makes it hard to choose base on performance quality alone. Still would be cool, though.

I didn't really like Lateralus that much when it first came out. It took four years, but now I like it better than Aenima. Funny.

Maybe I will send a message of the concept. A box set of A best rendition of each of their songs from each of their albums.

Yeah as they are all audience recordings, sound quality was playing a role and not just performance alone. But sometimes I prefered the less than best sound quality recording. One example is one of the earlier east coast US city shows that sounds like it's in a gigantic cavernous barn. It has loads of reverb and echo but it's my favourite 'Eulogy' as Maynard's vocals have a huge intensity which I think suits the song. When he scream/shouts in the end it obliterates all other instrumentation with volume. Love it.

I've been out of touch with the Tool community (+file sharing) for a long time. I logged into the official site and saw my last login was Nov.9 2003! That place is still messed up I saw.

Someone posted earlier asking if Tool listeners had a lot of angst.. well I think I have a pretty varied taste in music (Rock/Metal/Jazz/Classical/Folk/Indie) and I keep exploring new music styles but every time I return to Tool and am amazing. It is something about their music that strikes a chord (probably D

) with me. Pu**** (live) on Salival and the song Lateralus.. wow.

And to the submitter of this thread, if Tool doesn't jive with you, don't force it down your ears. Explorer other genres/bands and come back later to see if it works. For me they clicked right away (2001) and I've been liking them more each listen, hehe I have actually listen to their songs over 4000 times in total
