I'm moving to the far North of Scotland next month and, apparantly, the place I'm going is one of the best in Europe for surfing. I've never surfed before, is it easy to pick up and what would the cut off point be age wise? (ie: do you need loads of energy or do you just stand on the board etc?)

I won't be far from here:

World championship was held there this year apparantly. Yeh, I'll give it a go when I get up there probably either buy a secondhand board or rent one to see how I get on

If anything, look upon it as a chance to invest a in a pair or waterproof headphones.

Just be careful abotu where you park your car near the sea in future.

Looks like a nice break... cold but nice! I'm 32 and I don't ride the short boards anymore... too much work! Try and rent a board and see what you like... you can start with a hybrid... something like an 8'10" and if you want easier go with a long or longer board.

Those waves look a bit big for starters though... remember they are measured from the back so when you hear 5-6 feet the face is more like 9-12.

When I was looking at the house the bloke told me "30 foot waves"

I think I'll start on something a bit more manageable like a 1 foot wave or something

This is about what 30ft looks like (give or take a few)

inset scared face here!

I wont go larger than 5-7... it just gets too crazy and you have to hold your breath too damn long when you spear through waves as you paddle out. Start with a nice 2-3 slow and mushy break on a long board... that should get you into it.
