How much is the modified velour option?
Long time lurker, first time post. Can't think of a better time to get started. I would love to be a part of this opportunity but lets try to keep things easy on smeggy. It sounds like he's going to very busy.
Svyr, sadly I'm not going to have time to do replacement wooden blocks at the moment with the group buy just because of the sheer workload I have on my hands. I might be able to update them at a later time though. For right now, no time!
Googleli, the isolation is, I think, a small increse, and the sound imo is a little better. More air and a slightly better balance.
Oqvist,
Speaking for myself, I prefer mine to the LCD2, I know it may sound nutty to some but we all have personal preference and I like mine more because I can make mine do exactly what I want in a phone and they get 95% or more ear time. The LCD is a superb headphone and I love them to bits, the proof of the pudding though is in what I tend to pick up and listen to, that ends up being the TPs. Now, I'm not saying the TP is the better phone, I'd never dream of being that presumptuous, it's better for me. I wear mine in the region of probably 6+ hours a day, every day.
"Closing the port how much do you feel it destroy the sound. I am sure it help with ev reverb or resonance issues but as mentioned hard time believing it would better the LCD-2?"
Closing the ports will completely destroy the sound because they need venting. It's not a 'bass port' per-se, or anything to do with reverb or resonance. It's that the driver is designed to work with an air vent. Without it there is little bass or depth, similarly, the driver isn't designed to be used open backed and sounds equally bad as such. Again, which is 'better' is a personal preference based on what sonic signature you prefer.
"What is the lightest you can get this? Possible to go lighter then the stock version?"
It's a tough proposition but I am getting close using lightweight replacement materials in my latest experiments. I don't know if it will ever be below stock weight as it uses very thin and light plastic, however, any additional weight is more than mitigated by vastly superior comfort. It is possible to get close though providing people don't ask for woods that are very heavy and dense. There's only so much I can do.
Update:
I have managed to reserve 5 blocks of the blackwood and three of macassar, I'm still tracking down more macassar and the ziricote. I have access to the purpleheart and others. Tracking down all the parts and what-not is taking some time.
Hi Brent,
Just verified my order details and updated the comments section in the shared spreadsheet:
Cocobolo (gloss finish instead of matt)
Stax O2 pads (choice of O2 pad colour up to Smeggy - whatever looks the best)
Many thanks.
No worries. I've updated your detials to the following.
Jalo I am 100% committed to the group buy, regardless of final wood(s) to be used.
LCD2-Rev2 pad
Macassar Ebony
Can you verify this is correct? Thanks
I can tell you right now, if Smeggy can find any at all, the price will easily be well over any other wood he has used. It's a protected wood now and it's not easy to come by at all.
Yes, it is confirm as indicated above, and as Sperandeo posted above, if a balance connector is available, I would like to pay for that options.
Order verified. A balanced connector instead of a 1/4 jack?
Sml1226,
Thanks for the heads up. I'll see what the price differential is like before making a final decision. That is, if Gary can find it at all.
Quick question since you seem to be knowledgeable on these matters: Looking at those two photos I linked, do you know of any other woods that look similar, but may be easier to procure?
Thanks,
Brent
