The Stax Thread III

I haven't seen a mention of it here yet, but spritzer has listed the Octave v4 on his site. Its form factor is quite appealing for desktop use, at 220mm deep, 145mm wide, and 73mm high, about 2/3rds the depth of the SRM-353x. My funds are a bit tied up at the moment, and there are plenty of other things ahead of a new Stax amp in the queue, but it looks to be one of his new mainstay amps, so I might pick one up in the future.

I have one of the early Octave V4 from @spritzer . He did a special version for me: one normal bias and one pro bias. It's excellent and has serving me well. :)

The D10 has a replacement incoming, the D10mk2 that was shown off at CanJam Dallas. But the 007 being discontinued...

Wow the 007 being discontinued is crazy. 1998-2023 has to be one of the longest runs for any headphone not made by Koss.

I think that really speaks to the unique sound signature of the 007 compared to every other model they've released since 1998. Nothing ever replaced (or even approximated) it and I'm curious if they will try to replace it now or if that sound is just gone entirely out of their product stack.

I'm also curious if the 009 will achieve that same longevity.

If I'm reading this correctly , the 007a is discontinued but that's specifically the japanese color of the headphone.
The 007 mk2 in black will still be available for purchase.

/edit - crap now that I'm looking at the site it doesn't look like 007 of any type is listed. wow....

Well, there go used 007 prices. Get yours while you can, boys.

X8000, or w/e it will be called, better be good.
Before the panic buying sets in - we should confirm if it's just the 007a or all 007.
@HeadAmpTeam as an official stax dealer can you chime in?

Well, the sr-009 has been discontinued. Only the sr-009S is available. They are not the same headphone even if they are close.

Well, I guess I have my answer now...
I don't think there is any plan for an X8000. Would have been almost as expensive to make as an X9000, yet even more cost to actually develop it. Does not make sense from a business standpoint.
Essentially, they always had only one new flagship product above Lambdas that they've developed, and the older stuff simply remained alongside for a while.
So, at some point, the 009S might be discontinued as well, since it is still essentially one single lineage of flagships.

They've claimed they will update the amplifier next, then the X9000 to an 'S' version, and so on.

If the X9000 got an S version I don't know where they even have left to go price-wise. I feel like $5-6k is pretty much the final price tier (Utopia, Susvara, X9000 etc) before you get into halo products that are skies-the-limit well into the five figure range. Maybe an actual SR-Omega would end up being cheaper lol.

True, though I suppose at that point we'd probably count the different versions of the 007 differently as well.

Since we're on this topic maybe someone can confirm if I'm understanding the 007 series history correctly: so Stax had the 007 and then later the 007A/007mk2, which encompassed everything from the 2->2.5->2.9 under the unofficial fan names?

Also I agree it would be nice to confirm if the discontinuation is just for the 007A or for the 007 as a whole. I am assuming it is the latter as I can't see them continuing to produce the mk2 for western markets and only discontinue the 007 domestically.

I think this is what you're saying above as well, but I checked Stax's JP site and the 007 is gone entirely, it's just the 3 L-series Lambda, the 009S and the X9000.

The international websites like stax-international.com still show the 007mk2, and the US dealer sites still show it, though they might do so until their inventory runs out.

Best case would be that the silver color 007a is discontinued while the black color mk2 remains. Does anyone have insight into the Japanese Stax market and fan base? It seems that Stax are relatively common in Japan, but that market is somewhat insulated from the Stax fan base internationally. I wonder if the 007 isn't as popular in the home market compared to international. To me, it looks like the biggest 007 fans are not Japanese, but that's very likely just sampling bias on my part since I don't interact with Japanese audio communities.

A few pages back, I mentioned that the earpads for the L500 are harder to get. Well, I guess I remembered wrong, because they're available at HeadAmp for $100. So it should be possible to put them on my L700mk2 turning it into a "super-L500" combining the earpads of the L500 and the driver of the L700. Not sure if it will sound any better than the L700, but I'm very tempted to find out.
