The Stax Thread III

Have to agree, the AMTS is going to veil the usual very very open ethereal sound of estats and come across as somewhat closed I image if its like the expanse.

Not saying it sounds better or worse but definitely would not be as transparent…
Yup, it leads to a very neutral sound but you can definitely tell there's something over the driver because it just isn't as airy and open. It didn't really make sense to me when I assessed it as an estat, but when I considered it as fitting into a planar spot in someone's collection, it made a lot of sense.

I also think it's probably a good pick for the few people in this hobby that are sane enough to only have one headphone.
It's well rounded like all the latest DCA headphones.

You are all assuming that AMTS is the cause of what you are hearing, but since you can't hear the same headphone without it, you don't actually know, The whole point of it is to shape the frequency response. If it caused the headphone to sound veiled, it would not be working. This is not just some piece of plastic. Those channels are really cutting edge tech, no hype.

If you don't believe me, take a look at the frequency response and waterfall plots for the Stealth. You will see an almost ideal frequency response, if you like the Harman Target and you will see a clean waterfall plot. I'm not sure what you are hearing. I don't doubt you, but I don't hear a veil at all.

I own both Expanse and E3, I love AMTS and agree it's not hype.

That said, Corina did not sound open and airy to me, the same way Expanse is the least open of open backs.
What is the only thing they have in common? AMTS. Getting pretty off topic so I'll leave my comments on it there.

You can actually as the Corina is based on the original Voce design with improvements / AMTS. It is just an inherent trait of estats because there is very little blocking exterior sound and even hovering your hand over the outside of the diaphragm affects the sound signature.

I change the earpads of my SR-L500 to the SR-L700 pads. Mine were de-laminating. I was using the convolution filters from oratory found here: https://github.com/jaakkopasanen/AutoEq/tree/master/results/oratory1990/over-ear/Stax SR-L500. I used to love the results, but with the new pads the sound is a lot darker than I like. I tried the filters for the Vesper earpads, it's a bit better but still doesn't feel 100% right. Anyone knows if there is some filters specifically for the SR-L500 with SR-L700 pads?

You could try using the filters for the L700.

It looks like I'll go with a KGST from @headinclouds. It's not finished but I'll get the chance to demo it before making a final purchase. Result!
Just a quick update. Amp arrived around 10 days ago. Dealing with Geoff (@headinclouds) was a real pleasure and the amp has certainly met my expectations. Count me happy!

Geoff is a gentleman and a heck of a builder. I love the look of his amps, and I miss my KGSSHV Carbon I had from him.

The headinclouds amps always look slick. I really like the volume markings; those dots look so neat and refined.

Thank you for the kind comments. I was very pleasantly surprised by how good this KGST build sounded with my DCA Voce, it drove it easily. (Incidentally I think there is still one with similar electronics for sale in the classifieds). As for the looks of my builds, over the years I had very helpful style input from Julian Hoyes.

Oops, my mistake the listing has been closed.

Not really. I had the boards and still have tubes and many components so I did this KGST with CCS. You can never say never, but it depends on getting the urge!

It all started in 2012 when I heard a Stax combo which was nice but very weak and I discovered Kevin's designs. I made a KGSShv on-board heatsink and it went down well at a meet we had in London. I'll post that in under the hood.

I have the Audeze CRBN and I found a used L700 Mk2 for sale.

Is it worth checking out?

I mean, yes and no. What are you trying to get out of it?

L700 can sound very good but it can need some tweaking depending on fit. I find it needs a bit of EQ, and I had to replace the yokes on the headband so that it would fit my head properly. But when you dial it in, it sounds very nice, neutral, transparent, liquid mids and very open sounding. I'm not what it'll do that the CRBN won't, though. If you avoid doing any irreversible invasive surgery you can probably resell at little to no loss.
