The Stax Thread III
Apr 12, 2024 at 6:16 AM Post #25,381 of 25,522
I need to buy a pair of wireless phones ( noise reduction not needed ) that do not sound too different from
my Staxes (Lambda Sig, 404 Sig and L700 mkII). The Edifier “Stax” do not qualify mainly due to mechanical noises from
headband/earcubs,

Any suggestions based on experience ?

Hi All! I've got the SRM-313 and the first thing I did - i listened to it. Completely fantastic with the Lambda Pro!

But the second thing was - I opened it up and checked for the internals. This is the version with the vertically placed board and what surprised me a lot - there are no adjustable pots there for balance and offset. How can it be?

I measured the balance and it's fine. About 250 mV on the Right and around 1.2 V on the Left channel. But the offset is higher, abound 6 Volts on both channels.

Does anyone know why is there no pots to regulate the balance and offset? What for a version is it?

Thank you!

There are two energizers for sale right now for similar prices that both compare themselves to the BHSE. Anyone more knowledgeable about these things care to comment? Kevin? Which of these two would be a better amp?

This is a big 2 box amp:
https://www.head-fi.org/classifieds...-bhse-electrostatic-amplifier-for-stax.65285/

This KGST is only one:
https://www.head-fi.org/classifieds/amplifier-kgst-by-headinclouds.65283/

I realize just because an amp is in 2 boxes doesn't make it magically better.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

the correct answer is to buy both.

also found this on the web this morning

Just bought @icnaiwhimor1975's Sigma with 404 drivers. They're just so unique I had to have a pair as a collector's item mostly.

I also recently learned the meaning behind that infamous Sigma ad of the woman with the black eye. Perhaps many of you knew this already but it's actually a reference to an old cigarette ad, implying that the woman had to fight people off to keep her Sigma.

Congratulations, they really are very good and in fantastic shape. Take them out for a walk on occasion so they don’t get bored.

I will miss them
they have their own unique sound
I have only heard Sigma NB 230v 6 pin so far - they have great mids and smooth sound
and Sigma 404 - they have powerful three-dimensional sound

Oh they'll definitely get used (when nobody is around to laugh at me).

One is a bhse
the one that is mine - is Blue Hawaii BJT
https://www.head-case.org/forums/topic/12894-blue-hawaii-bjt-build-thread - here is build thread

I'm not the one who built it
but I tried to understand the differences between BJT and SE
As far as I understand
BJT is an updated version of the original Blue Hawaii with more modern components
(this is not exact, but it seems like old transistors can no longer be found new on sale)
also in SE there are additional RCA inputs and outputs and there is another output ccs - as far as I can see in se
"OUTPUT VOLTAGE 1600V peak-to-peak"
how much in BH BJT - I have not yet found out
I also haven’t found out yet what the output current is

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/the-stax-thread-iii.677809/page-1191#post-15062300

it seems to be written here

400v power supplies require 12ma of output current
a Blue Hawaii (BH) will easily do this and more

but how much more I still don’t understand - can BH BJT do 13,14,15 or 20ma or cannot
I see a clear relationship between the voltage in the power supply and the output current

although not everything is so simple - carbon can produce 20 ma with a 450v power supply

and cfae - 18 ma at 600v power supply

this only means - that everything is much more complicated than I thought
and to talk about such things - need a global understanding of the topic (which I don’t have)

maybe someone who understands this better than me can answer @Svperstar question

Sounds like you want a non-engineering answer so...
The BHSE is a Porsche 911 and the KGST is the Porsche 718

Since it's the BJT it's like a... a Turbo instead of the base model? lol
we can also notice that in one there are large tubes in the other there are smaller ones
I guess I agree that the correct answer is - to buy both
and also get t2 and megatron and carbon for variety

So bigger tubes = unlimited power?

So bigger tubes = unlimited power?
it was a joke, like the one about Porsche

BH BJT uses EL34 (maybe others too - I don't know)
KGST uses 6S4A (maybe others too - I don't know)

I don't think something sounds better and something sounds worse

I also don’t know which of them have more power and whether this affects the output swing and output amperage - everything is quite complicated in these electrostatic amplifiers

https://www.head-fi.org/classifieds/kgst-electrostatic-amplifier.58341 - here's another cool kgst

By the way, some things was described here by @Chefguru

Both Kgsshv and the Carbon are often 400v (both are from Mjolnir), but could theoretically be 450v or 500v although neither will offer much benefit imo.

The main difference between the carbon and the others is the current.

Carbon can generate over 18ma (up to 22ma).

Kgsshv only 8-10ma.

This KGST is built off 400v also.

Current should be around 8ma+ I believe, so similar to the kgsshv but with 6S4A tubes which give it more forgiving sound. It is a hybrid amplifier, so more in common than not.

@Svperstar - I don't know how true this is, but I have no reason to think it's not true since I've seen @Chefguru have a lot of cool amps
