The Stax Thread III

Well my LNS arrived but the seller (eBay) was not very honest in his description of them. They were described as "These headphones are in working order and require ear pads." So I figured I'd just toss on a new set of pads and I'm good. Nope, they're full of hair and dirt and also the drivers are falling off from the housing internally...

It appears I have my work cut out restoring these.

EDIT: Nevermind I feel dumb. You just pull the pads off, for some reason I thought the blue tac mod was plastic under the pads between the driver and the filter, not higher up directly on where the pads connect

Is there a guide on how to take the Lamba's apart to do the blue tac mod?

Fixed/cleaned. Think it might have a bit of channel imbalance though, gotta bust out the microphone and see.

You could try the trick I found from the HE-60 thread recently which was, on the side that has less volume, press it against your desk with pads facing down and kind of roll it both length ways and sideways with a bit of pressure (you'll hear it making a sucking type of sound), might seem absolutely bonkers to do this but it did work for me and in fact I do it regularly for my old Lambda. It's to detatch the membrane from the stators apparently.

It might not be the exact problem & solution to yours so be careful but thought I'd mention it anyway, good luck

Good to know! That's actually how I attached the new pads, I pressed them down on the desk (slowly to not build up air pressure) in order to get the adhesive to seal well. Maybe I shouldn't have!

Anyway, turns out there's no channel imbalance, I think my ear was just clogged haha. I did discover my MiniDSP EARS has a channel imbalance though.
When I measured the left side with the left ear mic and the right with the right ear mic, there was a 3dB difference. When I measured both channels on just the right ear mic, they were exactly the same. I tested with both a 1kHz tone and 500-2000Hz noise, idk if channel imbalances show up more in certain frequencies or not but all tests read 91dB for me (when I used the same "ear" to test them)

Anyway, the Novem is warmed up, time to give these crusty old brown cans a listen

If you are using a Lamba and haven't done the blu tac mod holy crap do it! I made sure to surround the entire driver. Whole process took between 5-10 minutes tops. The bass slams now, great rumble.

In the honeymoon phase but I'm tempted to sell my 007 mk2 and just keep the modded L500 mk2, it sounds fantastic.

You prefer your bluetac L500 over the 007? Interesting, which energizer are you using and which things do you prefer about it?

Immediate impression of the Lambda Nova Signature is that it has a similar trait that I experienced in my brief time with the Omega, it's not flashy, it doesn't seem special, it's just very "natural"

Personally, I tried the blu-tac mod on my L700mk2 and ended up taking it off. It sort of improved the bass, but the L700 doesn't seal on my head anyways, there's a gap behind the ears, so I could never get the perfect acoustic seal that the mod was supposed to create. The mod also made the midrange peak on the L700 even worse, by several dB based on my miniDSP EARS measurements. Plus it killed the air in the treble. So I ended up undoing the mod and returning the L700 to its stock state.

I started listening on my Stax T1S but switched to my Stax 717, neither are modded(as far as I know). One thing is the L500 fits my head perfectly, I am constantly fighting the 007, I have different earpads in the mail, they will be here tomorrow.

With the mod the L500 have plenty of bass, which is the 007s main selling point. So has that crystal clear Stax sound and bass, not a lot missing with the L500

One thing I like to do with headphones to test how "real" their timbre is, is watch YouTube videos of live solo vocalist recordings. Human voice is the most real "instrument" to us, so this really focuses on that, and with the video cues it's really easy to break the sense you're there. When you have a headphone that sounds realistic, it just clicks, your brain sees the person singing, hears the sound and goes Ok yeah, that's right or Whoa, something is off here. Much easier to tell if something is off when you're actually watching the person sing it in the same room they sang it in. Anyway, these pass that test.

Here's an example track I use, brilliant female vocals in nothing but a room with a piano.
