The Stax Thread III

Hi,

Has anyone used Stax SRM-007ta amp to drive their SR-007 headphones. I have Stax SRM-007ta up from sale that I only used with SR-009s headphones and one of our fellow head-fier was asking if SRM-007ta would have any issues driving SR-007 headphones, since I dint have an answer I wanted to check in this thread if anyone used this combo and if there were any problems.

Thanks in advance.
No problemo

IME it's fine for low to medium volume but not really fine if you want to listen even moderately loud. It just doesn't have the juice and starts to compress and distort when you turn it up. Dynamics also suffer even at low to medium volume.

However a modded 007t should be fine though it won't leave you as much headroom as more powerful amps.

This.
You will hear bass distortion at mid 80db on heavy bass tracks with a stock 007t.

Time for a listen on the Lambda Nova Signature out of the KGST. Age has not dampened the sweetness of the sound. :)

I agree that you should consider something from Birgir. His amps start around $3000. Check what he might have to recommend.
Birgir has modded/refurbished Stax amps for considerably less. I bought an 006tA from him last year for $1400.

Finally got my 2.5kV scope probes and some 120pf caps to do some testing with the converter...

These Lundahl Transformers are certainly fun to explore... Seem to be incredibly well tuned with sine wave distortion creeping in right on 20-25hz... Seem to be usable to about 800vpp. Very linear from 30hz onwards so far.... Much more testing to do with the limited tools I have for this...

Currently testing with the Topping LA90 - Stereo / Monoblock and the Sony TA-N9000ES in BTL Mode (210Wpc)

Managed to pick up a Lambda Nova Signature in impeccable condition, including the ear pads off Yahoo JP auction. Pleased. Enjoying it now off the Carbon. :)

Thanks! Yeah... Stax is one of those wonderful estat makers whose offerings are still excellent sounding today

I had to send my amp out to Iceland to be repaired, but after a month and a lot of money in shipping it's back in good working order.
The SR-007 are really something special and how I imagine Audeze would turn an estat in the early 2010s. I've read they scale well with more power, but for the foreseeable future I don't see the need for an upgrade.

Mjolnir Audio SRM-006tA with a CCS mod. A few months ago I was getting static-like noise in the left channel that increased with volume and evolved into a noticeable imbalance. From spritzer: "The HV- line wasn’t working and it was a failed resistor that connects the two caps there. I’ve seen this before on the T1/T1S/T1W and 006t amps so I replaced the resistor and also replaced the capacitor after it as it had seen some distress and was bulging"
As of right now everything is in good working order and I've been enjoying the SR-007 as much as possible.

Thank you. About ccs is an improvement? Some people wrote that with ccs the sound loses a little the characteristic of the tubes to approach the solid state. I' m in the same situation with T1. Mine works but needs a refresh so i'm thinking about ccs

those power resistors and caps in question hardly amount to say $25 - why not replace those when having the thing open anyway since the fault is well known?
did you get any explanation as to why the static was left channel only and caused by a fault in the power supply common for both channels?
