The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread

i am bit confused, some say the l700 is not very bright, and some say its very bright and has alot alot of treble
some say its got some fullness, and some say its thin and bright

some say it suits all genres, some say its cold and analytical and only suits certain types of music

What DAC/amps are being used may have something to do with it (besides personal preferences.) There's a noticeable difference in the sound of my L300 between just the SRM-323S and Mjolnir SRD-7/ NAD C275BEE setup.... and its different with DFR compared to Gustard X20U.

The secret to really make the L700's sing is to pair them with tubes. I listened for about an hour to them and switched between the srm-353x and the srm-006ts. The tubes make them sound fuller, more "alive" compared to the srm-353x.

hi does it make a big difference using 006ts vs 353x

Or even better buy the 007ta. I think I know a guy that has one for sale in his signature block:wink:. But in all seriousness, so far I have liked the L700 the best through tube amps without a doubt. You will not be disappointed.

Hey guys, I’m just jumping aboard the Stax train right now. I recently got myself a used Stax SRM-600 Limited and SR-507. While I like the sound a lot I’d like to upgrade the earspeakers. So I’m trying to decide between the L700 and 007. I’ve auditioned the 007 und 009 and while objectively the 009 offered more detail and an even better soundstage, I kind of preferred the slightly darker tonality if the 007. I didn’t listen to the L700, just the L500 and those were a noticeable step below the 007‘s. Price wise it’s gonna cost me about the same to get a new pair of L700s as it costs to get used 007s.

Do you guys think the SRM-600 would adequately drive the 007s? It should have a bit more power compared to the other Stax tube amps. How does the 007 compare to the L700 with this setup?

Thank you so much in advance for any advice

All the Stax tube output amps use output stage plate resistors. The SRM-T1/006 series is generally considered underpowered for the SR-007s. The SRM600 Limited is marginally more powerful than the T1/006 series - if you look at the schematic diagrams, the T1/006 uses 66k output plate resistors whereas the 600 uses 60k resistors, so it runs about 10% more current in the output stage. That's not a very large difference. The SRM-007t uses 2 6FQ7 output tubes into 47k resistors, which is about 40% more output current and it is considered marginal for the SR007s.

Now, if you are into DIY, you can modify it to use constant current source outputs in place of the resistors, which makes a significant difference. Check out Muffinhead's comments on the unmodded and modded T1 driving port-modded SR-007s on the Stax III thread between 1/06/18 (unmodded) and 2/05/18.

Hello I am getting an L700 here in the short future. Im between a 353X and a feedback and gain modded 727II. I would like to know which is the better synergy overall

So, I have joined the Stax club. Picked up my L700 and SRM-007tII earlier this week. Have been enjoying them all afternoon today.

Now would probably be a good time to step away from this game for a while...

I could only confirm this one time with one demo unit in e-earphone shop akihabara Japan, that unit had fuller bass and warmer sound than my L700 which made them not bright at all. But all other until including mine are neutral with hint of brighteneness at higher volume, remember they use the similar driver to 009 which make then inheritly bright. Even warmer versions are not as warm as 007 or audeze offering

Im a bit curious about something. Does the L700 and the new Lambda line in general tend to exhibit the ethreal bass and ghosts playing ghost intruments to a great degree (Think Lambda Nova Basic System). I like a bit of that quality but not like so much so that it is surreal sounding. I have heard the L-700 but only briefly and in show conditions so could not make any concrete conclusions on presentation of the sound
