The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread

I wonder, based on the claims/assumptions that the only difference between the L300 and L500 are the earpads, headband assembly and cable, how does one go about purchasing the L500 earpads? I can't seem to find spares for the new series anywhere

You can contact Stax via email. They do respond and steer you to the right direction.

I have a 2020 system and wonder if either the 4400 (valve) system or the new 5100 system will have greater body and warmth - i am thinking of upgrading but only to get better sound and by this i mean more warmth and body.

thanks

I'd try an amp upgrade first personally.

The L300 did nothing for me....very bright and harsh to my ears even out of very good amplifiers, including Stax and KG designs.

More brighter and harsher than the SR-L700 and SR-009?

The L300 has very shallow earpads. As a matter of fact, I was quoted about 200$ for the L500 pads [!], which further reinforces the theory that the difference really comes down to pads, cable and construction, with the internals being identical.
And the sound difference likely comes to earpads [shallow - more upfront and aggressive sound vs deeper L500 pads]

I would say the L700 are a bit more revealing than the L300 and L500. So they tend to reveal imperfections clearer.
I would not consider any of them harsh though. Not quite Utopia smooth but fairly close to the Flow in terms of harshness. I do think the Staxes have them beat in treble clarity and extension, which does bring out a teeny bit more sheen, which reveals any glare or brightness a bit more.
Still consider them quite a lot smoother than the 009 and similar to the 007mk2, if a bit brighter than that.

what kind of music are you listening to?

Not much audiophile music :D
Pretty much anything, from rock, pop, instrumental, soundtracks, folk, alternative... Lots of contemporary music, lots of which is not superbly mastered.
I am also sensitive to treble peaks, so I choose headphones withoout spikes ( could not keep the HE1000).

Nope. I am good :)
I can appreciate a technically capable headphone as long as it does not spike :)
As my music production and mixing demands.
Best of both worlds, I enjoyed the L500 - 252S immensely.
That is, unless I can afford the new Orpheus :D That thing is godly in all aspects.
