The muffled sound you don't want would have more to do with the earphones than the player (though I guess the player could make it worse/better). CX300 are renowned for an overpowering, muddy bass, not sure about the CX500.

Anyone using the CX500 care to say whether the bass is any clearer?

Yup Punslayer, S630/S730 comes with the dock insert. But i just found out that it's pretty exp for a dock. Usd50+. But still cheaper compared to anything related to Apple haha

Yep DJ is right clip/fuze sounds pretty flat, but no bass roll off so it still has a good low end. Sony sounds a little deeper and a little more sparkle in the treble. I would bet the sound is tweaked a little on the sony, but it still has remarkable imaging and detail. Also if someone finds the service menu, you could take the tweaks off, like the a818. Then it would be more transparent. I hope I am explaining this o.k. I also want to add, the s series sounds more natural and smooth airy than my a818 did out of the box.

So:

Sansa - analytical, but a little on the "boring" side

Sony - still analytical, but fun

Also, could you describe how much the bass/treble boost is, and tell me if vocals or other midrange frequencies are recessed at all? Would you recommend the Sony or the Sansa for rock and folk?
???

nobody said analytical.

sansa is not boring either.

sansa is perfectly flat, but it is fun with very good soundstage and clean sound. I like the sound with a bit with more treble and equing a sansa does not work all that well.

sansa fuze plays any kind of music well IMHO.

So, Sansa>Sony for rock and folk? Or did I misunderstand that?

And is anything recessed, veiled, or brought out too much with the Sony?

correct me if I am wrong, but the Sony frequency response looks like a mild "U" with slightly emphasized lows and highs.

The sansa is practically flat.

So, is that good or bad for rock and folk?

Awww damn the black one is out of stock. Please help me before they restock. This is the last leg of the road for me in deciding which player to buy.
