The Sony 40th Anniversary Walkman Thread

I have external DACs that it works with such as the FiiO Q3, BT5, and Q5S. But those specifically have the ability to decode file types like DSD, FLAC, etc. The Multibit DAC is not capable of those. It needs PCM. How do we get the Walkman to output PCM? I remember there was a setting somewhere for it no?

I'm pretty sure decoding (FLAC->PCM) is done at the player, not the DAC. The Walkman player does have a setting for auto DOP/PCM vs raw DSD in the settings. Have you tried it with your multibit?

Schitt multibits do not support DSD unless converted to PCM at the player.

Where is that setting? When I plug in my FiiO DACs their changing light colors based on the filetype indicate that the codec is passing through

Sony Music Player app, more vert (three dot vertical), Settings, USB Output for DSD.

Again, decoding is done by the player/cpu/processor, not the DAC.

Awesome! Yes this is what I remember. What do the two options—Auto and DoP—stand for?
Auto is supposed to pick either native DSD or convert to PCM based on the DAC capabilities. DoP is "DSD over PCM" which some DACs support instead of native DSD. For a Schitt multibit, you would choose Auto because the multibit DACs don't support DSD or DoP, only PCM.

This is great thank you. Schiit told me the player was incompatible with the Multibit and I had to use 3.5mm. So pumped about this now! Thanks again!

If you have any issues, you might want to consider UAPP (USB audio Player Pro) from the Play Store. It has more features and options and is a great Android music player.

UAPP is able to directly use the S-Master DAC since a while, and the sound is different, even if for doing bit-perfect audio, UAPP plays audio to the same path as the Walkman player app. It seams very reasonable in my opinion to assume that the sound signature comes from the player app itself, and not just from the DAC/circuitry.

This is mostly how the non-Android (post-2016) Walkman players work. Just running the WM1A/Z firmware (which is basically a big Linux executable/app with various services behind) on the smaller A30/A40/A50 players greatly improves the sound quality.

My point is that the Sony sound signature may also apply to a connected USB DAC if the music would be played from the Walkman player app, unless the app is made specifically not to do this.

I have no issues! Works GREAT! Sounds awesome!

HOWEVER the MODI does not charge the player. Super bummed about that. I basically need a USB coupler, three ports: One port for me to attach a super flexible 50cm DDHIFI silver coated USB C cable that connects to the walkman. A second USB C port which I connect the USB C PD power cable to. And a third USB A OR USB C port which I can connect a cable to for the DAP. I have a USBC to USBB adapter so the last cable could be USB A to USB B or USB C to USB C (B adapter).

Any ideas?

I use this specific adapter. It's USB-C for charging and USB-A to the DAC. Basically, it's an Apple CCK, but for USB-C.

I just received two of these adapters and they don’t work. They send data to the DAC, or power to the Walkman. But when both are connected it only charges the Walkman.

This works for you?

Yes, mine works fine. I usually connect the power first and then the USB data. I'll experiment and see if it makes a difference.

It works either way. Do you have another Android device to try on?
