I don't think anyone is hooking there equipment up to O Scopes. Well they probably are but not your average person who is buying entry level and mid grade stuff like this

How does the Modi 2 Uber compare to the HRT Music Streamer II+?

My suggestion would be to buy a Modi 2 Uber and compare it for yourself. If you don't think it is better, you can return it.

Having owned a Bifrost, my guess is a Modi 2 Uber would slaughter an HRT Music Streamer II+ (I have the HRT MS Pro and couldn't compare to the original Bifrost).

Placed an order for a Magni 2U and Modi 2U on December 19th - just got shipping notification! Huzzah! Too bad they'll probably come whilst I'm at CES... Oh well.

Just wanted to throw it out there as far as where they're at in their order fulfillment for the Modi 2 Ubers.

I'm very tempted to do exactly this. I'm a software engineer, but I work at a company that does hardware and software, and our hardware team does things with RF and intermediate frequencies with much higher requirements than audio gear. I'd love to sic our hardware engineers on audio gear! Or at least find out how my gear is performing.

I don't mind one way or the other, I'm just sitting here watching from a Auto/Transportation Industry point of view: we would've built-in a triplicates of choice & price!   The marketplace loves three choices, the cheap one with roll up windows and no AC will sell quite well in the poor markets and provide Price Leader positioning.

Tony - while I agree with you on the one hand, I'd argue that they've plenty of price points already (Magni, Vali, Asgard, etc.), and further segmentation within individual price points isn't going to have any impact in THIS industry. When talking about cars, the average person buying a car will see "$16,000 for base, $19,000 for mid, and $22,000 for upper tier" and each will have distinct, point-to-able differences that you can say "Oh! This is why it costs more, and is that worth it to me." When you're dealing with subjective, use-based differences where the type of person buying a $100 amp is also comparing it to a $125 amp (per your suggestion) and a $150 amp, where the differences are really VERY subjective - too many choices will cause choice paralysis.

Look at how well Apple has done - based largely on limiting choices. I worked for them for several years in sales, and walking a customer through "MacBook vs. MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air" was stupidly easy; HOWEVER, once you got down to "2.1ghz with 250gb of storage vs. 2.3ghz with 500gb of storage" people froze up and couldn't decide anything, eventually going with the cheaper - and presumably lower-margin - option. "Well, I have a ton of pictures (usually meant 3,000-4,000, or <10gb worth), so I should get the extra 250gb of storage, right?"

What Schiit is doing by making VERY clear distinctions between Modi 2 and Modi 2 Uber, separating them by $50 for price, does me, the consumer, a huge favor by making it clear exactly which one will best suit my uses. If they'd left in the original Modi, priced the Modi 2 above that, and the Modi 2 Uber above that, it would've made it a bit more challenging.

TL;DR - I completely agree. Triplicate choices in the auto industry is a fantastic idea. Triplicate, barely distinguished choices in the consumer electronics industry doesn't make much sense at all.

Mr. BabyWrinkles,

Ok,  I can agree.

I would've done it with the 100/125/150 and might have been totally wrong or perhaps it would work out better.   It doesn't matter, I'm not Schiit, I don't work in this industry and I'm ok with how they choose to do things.

I'm certainly not trying to rattle anyones confidence in Schiit products , I own 4 of em myself and am quite taken with their performance, which is remarkable considering the price they charge.

On the issue of accurate clocks in music:

So let's say that I have a Cesium fountain atomic clock in my home lab (I actually do) and that if I bypass the clock generated by the measly quartz used in say the Modi 2 I will hear a noticeable difference in the music when listening to complex passages?

If we want to settle this I'm happy to order a Modi 2 Uber and reverse engineer the atomic clock to it and then get back to you guys. Although I probably don't have time to actually do this as you know, life.

For the sake of argument though, do we really think it would make that much of a difference?

Mr.StanD,

I think you have a valid point.   How much PPM deviation is something that is not accurately described without getting inside the Designers Laboratory and cornering their research teams on the matter.

MSB are quoting these things in their descriptions of their Clock research and their three Clock models.  If you are engineer enough to understand these things you can contact them and they will respond.  I think they are discussing the actual number in their descriptions, usually I see it as pico seconds and "under Picoseconds" type of accuracy levels.

WWV in Ft.Collins is the big Hewlet Packard Atomic Clock that provides the World Standard for Time, I don't know if it is as stable or accurate as the Clocks that MSB or Antelope use, however you can access the WWV standard for calibration use via a 10 Mhz. Shortwave Receiver.  I think WWV broadcasts on all multiples of 5 Mhz in standard Amplitude Modulation ( AM ) with the Carrier being the actual accurate signal.  They also broadcast standard calibrated Audio Tones which are useful for instrumentation calibrations, hence the term: "traceable" being used in the instrumentation world.

I am not a Clock specialist, I only am aware.   I do know that the MSB people are way advanced in the World of Accurate Cocking , these lads are leading authorities who sell their expertise and contract design for anyone with the need.

Accessing WWV by way of a shortwave radio will be subject to propagation, phase shifts and so on, that'll be of no use. I'm an EE and CS, but I' m not breaking out the calculator tonight, it's New Years and I have to give the wife some attention. On instinct I can tell the few PPM will cause no harm as I once worked with electronic musical instruments. By the way, we percieve pitch (musical notes) exponentially, not linearly.
Happy New year everyone, good listening to all.

So what exactly is the advantage of this new UBER Modi 2 over the original Modi, other than all the new options? I see the same DAC chip is used but the firmware is significantly different.

Having Optical, Coaxial and USB in a DAC at this pricepoint is AMAZING!

I was planning on buying a USB Modi and an Optical Modi....no need for that now!

This will  piss off ALOT of manufacturers....and quite possibly change the industry for the better.

The Modi 2 UBER is REVOLUTIONARY and long overdue!!!!

Mr.Tux889,

You can simply have a look at Larry Gullman and/or Igor Levin's work and read the results they report on all this.  Larry Gullman of MSB may be reporting in greater depth.

Does clocking make a useful difference? :  All the music or BlueRay or DVD stuff available for purchase was created by studios equipped with these Clocks.  Why would they bother with Atomic Clocking?

The best person in audio to talk about this is Caelin Gabriel, founder of Shunyata. He's absolutely brilliant (that is no exaggeration) and he spent the first 20 years of his career figuring out ways to improve signal/noise for signals intelligence for the NSA! (note in passing: he was recruited by the NSA because he took a test to join the Navy when he graduated from college, and he scored so high he was snatched up by the NSA). Caelin has been developing a range of power conditioning products recently specifically designed to attenuate digital source noise/RF/EMI in the gigahertz range produced by DACs, CD players, etc., etc.

Well I got my Magni2U + Modi2U combo.  I have to say, coming from an iMod + Mini3 + HD650 this is such a mind blowing upgrade!  Schiit has really blown my mind with this combo, I've never heard the HD650s sing like this.  Balance, soundstage, and detail is just unreal.  I don't know what to say other than wow.  Let me compose myself and I'll try to write more, I'm going to enjoy this for a bit.

Man this is mind boggling, As a newbie. I can't seem to decide what version to go with. Can someone sway me in the right direction:
Headphone:  Philips Fidelio X2
Current Source: PC w/ onBoard Sound Card, Soon - FiiO's upcoming X3K
No plan for Speaker setups.
Or I could just save some money & get a Schiit Fulla, but I don't plan on going mobile w/ the X2 Headphone.

Mr. Puma Cat,

Dittos on that Gabriel fella from here in Detroit, our NVH (noise/vibration/harshness) guys use the Shunyata systems.  I've seen some of his amazing results.

Being around guys that understand this Shunyata technology has me in the deep end of the Pool, these are the scary smart people.
